Just piecing together old gravel bike as a CX bike for the winter. Stupidly forgot to get compressionless outers for the brakes but DO have some very nice new Shimano outers (the BC-R680 which transformed the brakes on my other bike).
Will it be 'OK', given that I'll mostly just be slithering around CX courses?
Am sure I've used normal outer in the past but not quite sure enough 😎
They might feel a little spongy, and you might have to adjust them a little more often, but they will work fine. I fitted some Hy/Rd's on my wifes Synapse with ordinary Shimano outers.
Nice, thanks. Am not fussy if spongy and have actually managed to salvage enough of the old compressionless stuff for the front brake at least, so happy days 👍
Can't see why not?
I'd just order some though, it'll be here by the weekend, postage strikes willing. I like the 'plain' Jagwire stuff, not a fan of the decorative braided stuff as it won't fit in standard ferrules s well as looking naff. And had uberbike braided before that but it fell apart due to being left in sunlight.
Top Tip, get some colorful stuff, that way when it comes to repairing/replacing it you can identify it in your spares box rather than everything being shimano-grey.
OP
I am really sorry, but with your disc brake history, they will be spongy and howl like a folk of geese 😆 🤣 .
At least you will gain a few places in races as you won't be able to slow down 😉
Aha! Well that's where you're (hopefully 🙄) wrong!
I noticed my MTB brakes were mostly silent last winter when I was dicking about on some local trails covered in cold wet slushy snow, usually perfect conditions for goose impressions. My theory is that they're the only rotors I've ever done any serious descending on, so perhaps they're the only ones that have been properly bedded in!
Have transferred them to CX wheels and bought same compound of pad (Swissstop yellow) for the Spyres.
Wish me luck 😆
As above it'll be fine, just maybe a bit spongy. I ran normal outer on mine for a few years as I didn't know any better when building up the bike. I now have compression less and it's better but it stopped me fine before
Won't have the power you get with compressionless cables, just buy the kit for £23 from Merlin
Thanks guys, I sometimes still forget I have a very good shop just down the road from me, they have compressionless off the reel so I can keep the fancy pants Ultegra for another time and still have bike ready for the weekend 😎
They'll not be completely gash unless they are full-length. A couple of short sections of normal outer should be acceptable.
Try normal on the front and compressionless on the rear, you can get a really well balanced lever feel that way. Oh.. you did the opposite.
: )
I’ve just done it as I wanted a winter road bike it a rush and they are rubbish I don’t trust them.
I did this once and only once. Brakes were spongy with no power.

I installed the TRP kit after running the Spyres with normal outers for a few years. Difference was huge, wish I'd used compressionless years ago!
