Hi all, I am after some help from those who have set up TRP spyres (or any brake really).

I have just put a set on my (new) cross bike. The front went on very easily and spins freely. However the rear drags. When viewed from above you can see the it sits too far outboard

Frame is IS and I have a Shimano PM adapter.

Things I have tried:
- take off the cables and loosen all the bolts - still drags
- Adjust the pads fully out using the adjust bolt things on the side - still drags
- Tried the adapters that came with the brakes - still drags

Potential things to try
- Swap front and rear calipers to isolate frame and caliper issues
- put a washer between frame and adapter

Any experience of any of these issues and potential solutions would be greatly appreciated.

cheers,

I assume you've tried pusing the caliper as far inboard as you can on the slots in the caliper?

Just adjust the adjustment screw on each side which sets the pad position. Although are you saying if the inboard side is fully backed off it still rubs?

If that's the case, you probably need to file open the caliper mounting slots slightly.

Before you file.....

Get a disc spacer and move the disc towards the frame a few mm. Should solve it.

On the ATP Tripster thread I put a few thoughts down about Spyre's and set up.

I had similar issues on the front on my CX (no issue with the BB7 that it replaced) - even with the pads fully retracted, it was really hard to avoid the one closest to the centreline of the bike rubbing.

After a couple of rides though it sorted itself out - I'm assuming that any slight misalignment of the PM tabs on the fork would have been skimmed off the new pads.

Filing was going to be the next option (spacing out the rotor was tried but caused its own rubbing issues) but I was very wary of removing material from a brake caliper given what it does and the potential for death... Mind you I'm sure there's a good bit of spare material in there for safety 😉

[iput a washer between frame and adapter[/i]

I'd do this before I started filing stuff.

At least you know a washer is going to keep everything square, filing is asking for misalignment.

Filing the slot sideways shouldn't have any impact on alignment - the PM tab and the caliper face do that...

sorry, yes - sideways should be fine - I had to do that on my Titus 'oops we got the alignment on the PM disk mounts wrong' Fireline.

But with an IS frame adding a washer is far easier.

LBS (DNA, Maidenhead) had "disc brake washers". 1mm thick - done the job perfectly. I've put them between the adapter and the frame mount.

Thanks all.

Welcome to the world of how disc brakes were adjusted before post mount 😀 I have spent many a happy hour carefully adding washers only to drop them all over the floor. thank god for post mounts.
