Hi,
I've just bought a new road bike with TRP Spyre mechanical disc brakes on and they rattle a lot. I think its the pads are sloppy and move inside the brake. If I put the brakes full on and rock the bike back and forth, there feels like play.
It's an annoying rattle when riding but not braking.
So, what's a decent fix for this (blob of grease on back), or are there pads made by a different manufacturer that fit better?
Thanks.
Are they routed internally? Roadbike of MTB?
I had them on my Defy and I was sure it was the caliper, but it turned out the dealer hadn't fitted a little rubber bung in my frame where the cables enter it and it was allowing them to move around and rattle inside the frame. I found the bung in the kit Giant provide in the box, secured the cable and pulled it taught and the noise went away.
Make sure the pads are properly adjusted. Dial the pads in with a 3mm hex key on both sides until they start to rub on the rotor, then dial them back just one or two clicks. You need to stay on top of this with Spyres, they don't adjust themselves like hydro callipers. If there's more than the minimum clearance on the pad in those callipers then you get rattle and rocking, and I think there's a small risk of the pistons spitting out their bearings and that would be A Very Bad Thing.
They also stop you much, much better if the pads are in the right place.
Zerolight. Thanks. It's a Defy Advanced. Sounds like it's coming from the front and back on mine. I'll check the rear cable where it comes out of the frame.
mintimperial, thanks I'll try that too.
