Got a spare pair of TRP Hy/Rd brakes and I want to put them on my commuter bike, which has flat bars. Any idea on decent levers? I know they are short pull so old canti levers would do but as they can be a bit spongy on road drops would a V-lever which pulls more cable be better or worse.
search ebay for dia compe SS7 or SS5. They are good, comfy (short-pull) levers.
You could also try the adjustable Avid Speed Dial SD5 or SD7 V-levers, as you can adjust the pivot length and their shortest setting isn't that far from a pure short-pull lever (25mm vs about 20mm IIRC). CRC has the SD7 for £18.
Shimano do some cheap flat bar levers too, although I never liked the shape myself. Depends how picky you are.
Running a longer pivot length (i.e. V lever) on a caliper designed for a short pull (e.g. a roadie brake) just gives a hard lever and less power. You may find this happens with the TRPs.
Honestly when you can pick up a set of old shimanos for less than £30 I don't know why you'd even bother.
Good choice on the Avid SD levers. Saw that you can get Ultegra level flat bar levers but just didnt like they were silver, the Avids look good
A Gyro on a jump bike is about the only reason I can see for using them over hydraulics on a non road/cx bike.
