Just put the new trp hy-rd brakes on and took the bb7 roads on the cross bike. And the feel a bit mushy. Using Ultegra STIs

Followed the instructions about the locking screw to allow the pads to fully retracted, taken out all the cable slack and released the locking screw. They work but a lot of cable throw.

Next tried bleeding - still a lot of lever throw

Next bleeding with the pistons slightly out to 'overfill' the reservoir. Better but still quite a lot of lever throw.

I can get them to feel great but only was is taking up the slack in the cable with the locking screw disengaged but the instructions specifically say I can't do that.

About to ring Upgrade but any ideas from other users?

I have been running them for nearly a year now(ultegra sti) and have found that I had to get through a load of cable stretch then they settled. On the whole they have been great but I'm looking forward to the 105 1x11 cable shift/hydro brake option.

Tang - what cables do you have?

I've got compressionless jagwire ripcord.

With you Ultegra levers when do the bite? How soon ?

Mine bite 3/4of the way to the bars when you pull the lever but then still need more lever throw to get them full on.
Compared to my mtb discs I'd expect them to bite at 1/4 of the way through the lever travel.

5603 105 stis with mine and agree they do have too much lever throw. If you are using older levers it will be worse still as Shimano changed the cable pull ratio a while back. Mine still have the cabling from my old bb7s which are not continuous and have inline adjusters. I'm planning on replacing the cables with a single continuous run. I have also contemplated adjusting the lever with a dremel so the cable attaches closer to the lever fulcrum which would make the feel less effortless but would change the travel.

Old new cables from the spares! I do routinely have to wind in the barrel, pull through as much slack as poss then wind out the barrel again. It's a pain, but I did get them as a 'industry gift'. I was originally after the spyre or bb7 sl.

Patience and repeating the instructions in the setup process can be surprisingly effective, I found I developed a bit more feel for it. Good cable routing and pulling it very tight before clamping also help. Seems obvious but it helps.

If you're feeling brave you can adjust the grub screw where the cable arm connects to the push rod. This has the same effect as the barrel adjuster but seems to give me better lever feel. You will never get it back to stock so will have to check you haven't overdone it and the pads will adjust every time you alter it. I suspect trp don't endorse it either.

Finally, if the fell had got progressively more mushy, it could be that you've over tightened and the pads aren't adjusting. Pop them out, push the pistons back then pump the lever to see if they progress or not. If not, wind the cable of until they do them they should sharpen up.
