Hi All,
So i have a older boardman cx pro that takes discs, currently running flatbars with standard hydro mtb , 9 speed mtb shifters but entire drive train is 1x9 speed road-
want to go to drops for touring on it....i have drops + 9 speed road brifters....
without having to go 10speed everything (shifters, cassette, chain and mech) to get hydro, wondering what are my options.
trp seem to have a whole host of callipers on their website and not sure i understand whats what!
i hear good things about cable disc brakes of theirs,
but also even better things about hydro
im assuming with the age of the bike i cant go flat-mount, so post-mount the only option.
i like the look of the road brake levers for drops, but that would leave me without a 9 speed rear shifter.
anyone got any advice? am i just going to have to get 2 cable actuated callipers and run existing 9 speed brifters???
You could find a nine speed bar end shifter or I think problem solvers do a mount for fitting mtb shifters onto drop bars.
I find hydro better than the juin tech cable actuated hydros I have on my spare cx bike but the Juin tech are pretty good. I looked at converting to ten speed to get hydros but the cost is ridiculous especially on a £500 bike. So a vote for cable actuated hydros from me.
You have some drops and levers, so you just need to buy a pair of TRP Spyres or Avid BB7 Roads (plus possibly adapters for the post mounts depending on what size rotors you're using) and that's it. Oh, and don't forget compressionless cable outer.
I'm a big fan of TRP Hy:Rd cable actuated calipers - excellent modulation/feel and stopping power.
Change the pads to a decent semi-metallic - I currently have great performance and wear from Uber Bike pads. I'd say this of any TRP disc caliper - the stock pas are rubbish.
I use TRP's own compression-less outers.
great info - thanks - yeah perhaps getting full hydro on 9sp just isnt that possible/financially viable and some cable hydros are the way to go - just that some say nah some say yeah, but as above, lot of yay's on here 🙂 !!!
so cable hydros :-
guess thats discussed in depth here

I found the spyres power really disappointing, not to mention my first set had to be returned for the same issue that the recalled brakes had, despite being a post recall model
heard good things about the juintech ones
