Hi All,

Before I get to into research, I wondered if someone has done something similar and can offer some words of advice.

I have a Tripster ATR (I'm guessing first version) as it's over 10 years old. The old girl has done well, but her running gear is getting a little tired.

I could do with a new set of wheels and all chain/crank/cassette etc is ready for a swap out. I'm also thinking of fitting flat bars to give me a bit more of an upright and wider arm feel.

So, I'm thinking of maybe swapping out the 2 x 11 (I think) and going for a single chain ring on the front.

What sort of things do I need to know about/consider?

Are there any good reference websites that can talk you through the process and show you where/what needs to be measured?

Thanks in advance,

GL.

Still have the same, if I was going to go 1x , I’d just buy a 1x chainset and stick it on, it’ll be fine. You can overthink this stuff!

One thing I wouldn’t do is stick flat bars on. Thing deserves more respect 😉

The old Tripster thread has a flat bar one (somafunk’s?) and it looked embarrassed

I dunno, I think it looks pretty good with an alt bar set up.

Re: 1x conversion - a GRX chainset will fit fine. you'll need a decent size cassette at the back which means you'll probably need a new derailleur too, unless you've already got a GRX one that can handle a wider range.

if it allowed him to enjoy riding bikes for even a little bit longer i am sure Somafunk has no regrets.

Hey Slackboy,

Stange question I know, but how do those bars feel compared to straight bars? If that's possible to explain 🤣

I've never ridden such bars so I'm entrigued.

Also, is that a MK1 ATR? what size tires do you have there? I'm thinking of beefing mine up a bit. Do the job, but wouldn't mind something a bit more plump!

Regarding new gear....I think I replaced stuff 5-6 years ago and everything is getting a bit tired (I've had the frame/forks) for 10 years, so a complete strip down and re-build is about right.

For me, two...actually no 3 points of moving to different bars.

I never ever ever use the drops and in fact don't feel too safe with my hands on the hoods when it gets proper bumpy.

I hurt my elbow and notice when I ride my ATR for 40+ KM's and more my elbow starts to ache. But yet I ride 40+Kms every day with my e-bike and flat bars and no issues after a weeks riding.

Lastly, if I go bike packing, it's a bit of a squeeze to get the the roll pack inbetween the the brakes.

Thanks everyone for your input.
Simon

I was only joking about the flat bars. Jeez some people are so serious! I think the pic slackboy posted was actually somafunk's bike.

Upgrade bikes are usually very helpful if you message them with questions about the chainline etc.
