Toying with the idea of adding my name to the 9 month waiting list for a set of Trickstuff brakes.
I'm currently running Hope E4 and perfectly happy with them, it just means other bikes will get upgraded.
Both Trickstuff option seem to be lighter than the Hope and I imagine I could get the Maxima with Kevlar rather than braided hose (which would make the weight difference between the two rather negligible) is there any reason not to get the more powerful option? Reviews suggest the control is still there.
Long shot, but anyone tried both?
Not tried both but I can give you some perspective.
I am 6ft 2 and 120kgs. I am solid rather than wobbly, so there's plenty of watts and inertia being applied. I run Piccolas and have power to spare using the standard Beta kevlar hoses. The strongest most modulatable (is that word?!) brake I have ever used. Expensive, but worth it. Frankly the weight is secondary. It's the performance that really impresses.
Unless you must have 'the best', I am sure that the Dirittessima will more than meet your needs.
I would frankly let availability dictate. If you can find either in stock (R2 Bike are usually good, or one of the other German sites), go for them. I wouldn't say that the Maximas are worth a 9 month wait if you can get the Dirittissima sooner. If both are available in the same time frame, why not go for the Maxima?!
I wouldn't get too hung up on the hoses though. They are both plenty strong enough.
The thought about the hose was more about internal routing being easier with smaller diameter Kevlar hose. Going by Hope's testing, the braided stainless don't actually increase hydraulic performance.
Trickstuff use Goodridge hoses. They are a little bit thicker and inherently less flexible than the Beta hoses that they use. My own experience is that if you want the more flexible Beta hose for routing purposes, you won't suffer a performance loss.
On the other hand, if you go for braided and have problems with internal routing, the Beta kevlar hose is quite cheap to replace and uses the same fixings (I think).
Another thing to consider is the Piccola HD.
Then you get the really neat Piccola lever for a super clean handebar and an infinitely adjustable angle of exit for the hose to help with routing around the shifter and dropper trigger and to cater for where the hoses enter your frame. The Dirittissima and Maxima hose exits the lever at a fixed angle and are quite long. The Piccola exits under the reservoir and close to the bar. Looks neater and has practical advantages. Also (as I discovered last weekend) is better protected in the event of a crash)
Instead of the C21 caliper (single piston) you get the C41 (twin piston same as the Dirittissima). That's a great combo. Light, minimal looking and plenty powerful.
Do it, do it, do it.
Just get the Maxima. If you have to spend that much money and wait that long, why would you not go all in?
Worth noting that if you order direct, you don’t pay for them until they ship, so no issue with just getting on the list. Also, if the stealth options become available, they get offered to those with an order in first.
I’ve got Maximas and diretissimas on order, hopefully arriving around Xmas, or sooner if they do a stealth run, but might change the DRT levers to Piccolas.
Also worth noting that if you can get just the DRT levers, there’s a chap running them with hope V4 calipers, seemingly with success.
Also, if doing internal routing, remember you’ll need a bleed kit, bionol (though mineral oil will work) and bleed block (all sold separately...)
Toying with the idea of adding my name to the 9 month waiting list for a set of Trickstuff brakes.
Just had an email from them. Waiting time is now 12-15 months. 😂🤣😭😭😭
Mine were due mid December, been told to wait for an email updating delivery time in the coming days...
Update...
'According to the current planning, your order will be processed in 58 (+/-4) weeks'
So potentially between June and August 2021, having ordered in March 2020. I make that 70 (+/-4) weeks lead time. (For both Direttissima and Maxima)
No rush then! Good job I'm happy with my Hopes. Like the idea of being on the list for the stealth option as well. Would actually be my first choice if it was available.
Hey guys, please remove if not allowed but I have a set of Direttissima’s for sale if anyone doesn’t to wait 9 months. I’ve ridden them about 5 times and believe me, they’re worth it. 😉
Dm me the details? Colour, price etc
I've been thinking about getting my name on the waiting list.
But wanted to ask anyone who owns trickstuff brakes about the bleed process.
Looking at the manual it says that a bleed should be performed with the brake off the bike and on a bench.
But what if you have an internally routed frame? Its seems like its saying to get the perfect bleed it must be a bench bleed.
But obviously after a bench bleed you need to disconnect the hose to route through the frame and that would obviously bring air into the system.
Am I missing something?
It seems that you could do a bleed with the brake still on the bike but you would have to omit a lot of the steps that the manual says is required to get the perfect bleed.
If you dont get a perfect bleed then you're not getting optimal performance.
Hows your bleed process been with an internally routed frame?
I am solid rather than wobbly, so there’s plenty of watts and inertia being applied.
You'd certainly slow down quicker if you didn't pedal your bike whilst applying the brakes.

Didn't find any problems doing it on the bike... I've got Maxima's FWIW.
Unbolted the rear caliper, pads out, bleed block in. Unbolted the lever, ziptied it to the bar in a vertical position. Then just bled it as per the instructions, but still with the hose routed in the bike.
Worked fine for me anyhow...
Ok thanks for clearing that up. I've since found the trickstuff bleed video on youtube and they do it on the bike!
Atherton bikes might be able to do a good price and quicker delivery, for these brakes, if you ask them nicely.
I did ask them nicely, didn’t get a response. Do you know different, or just guessing?
Paton do you have this on good authority?
Cant imagine trickstuff would be happy with atherton bikes undercutting them on price.
But if they will I wouldnt say no
Assuming this is a woosh moment, but it's probably to do with what happened with them & Hope.
I'm out of the loop here, can you elaborate?
