I'm after some new XC-level wheels

- boost both ends

- 29er

- going to be running 2.2 ish tyres so don't need to be super-wide or anything

- weenie but I'm 75kg so not crazy weenie

My initial idea was some LB carbon rims on Hope or Tune hubs, handbuilt.

I'd also consider factory wheels though, if there were any bargains flying about.

Budget is prob. about £700ish.

Make your wheelbuilder hate you, ask for snowflace lacing.

I've just fitted a set of these Ursus Alcor to my XC FS 29'er and they're ace, even with the "heavy" oversized RS-1 hub the set weighs under 1600g.

I'd go Light Bicycle on some interesting hubs.

I had Tune MTB hubs years ago (2007) and they were a bit dodgy; proprietary bearings, weird bonded end caps, freehubs prone to breaking up. I bought some new road ones 3 years ago and they've been faultless, would definitely have them again, seems they've gone from quirky niche stuff to actually being a bit more robust. Come in pimp colours too. I bought mine from Germany, just watch translations, I ended up with the wrong shade of green because I didn't realise there were two!

Otherwise DT240 are the obvious high end choice, dependable, if a little dull.

Another vote for Tune - on my 2nd set of King/Kong hubs now > no issues at all on either set of hubs.

A friend of mine who spanners for a UCI XCO team builds Knight carbon rims on Aivee hubs.

DT Swiss XR 1501 Spline One 22.5mm.

If my XM's are anything to go by they'll weigh in dead on the spec'd weight, taped with valves fitted. For the XR 22.5's that's sub 1500g.

They come with both Shimano and XD freehub bodies in the box and 6 bolt adapters if you don't want centre lock discs. Under £670 on Bike-discount.de too.

Get yourself a 54 tooth ratchet upgrade if you want super fast pick up

Tune, Industry Nine or DT 240's built on to Stan's Crests with some fancy Sapim spokes. Wouldn't bother with carbon personally, the weight advantage for the cost is negligable and I'd much rather have a set of wheels that I know will last rather than worry about them. Ran older Crests on my 140mm trail bike for years when I was younger (and lighter!) and never had issues.
