Hi all,

I really want a trek stache but I've never ridden one and am worried it would be too similar to my Fatbike. Is there anyone around the Exeter general area who has one? Any input on Stacie vs fatbike? Or better still anyone who wants to let me have a spin 😀

John

Specifically a Stache, or would another 29+ do to give you an idea?

If the latter then you're welcome to have a razz on my Krampus.....it's currently set up with Manitou Magnum Pros, which came off a Stache.

Well it was mainly the Stache I was looking at although if no one else puts their hand in the air then its probably as close as you'll get to a stache. How is the Krampus? What made you get it etc...?

Love my Stache.....totally different ride to fatbike.

rear wheel slammed forward as far as you dare (tyre/drivetrain dependent) and she’ll be really snappy around tight corners.

just a great, fun ride.

Hi Pipiom,

How is it different to a fatbike? Noticeably more nimble and quicker? Etc?

My fat bike is probably about 30lb. Light Dtswiss wheels with 120mm Mastodon on the front. 4.0 jumbo Jim's running tubeless so it's on the faster side of fatbike.

Love it. I was an early adopter, had one of the first lot to come into the UK as a chassis/rim/tyre bundle.

Bought partly because I like to be a bit different 😁 but also I was curious about how much difference big plus tyres would make.

It's great on all terrain, single-track to all day moorland epics.

I have played around with tyres and forks, and currently run a DHF front and chronicle rear. Good grippy rubber makes a big difference.

Sus forks I'm not convinced whether they improve it or not. The big tyres mean it's pretty comfy anyway. Yes you can push it a bit more with the forks, but I do like the 'pureness' of running it rigid.

I run it SS most of the time, but also have an Alfine rear wheel for if I'm doing a big, hilly day out.

I would go as far as to say it's my favourite MTB in nearly 30 years of doing it, and I've been (and still am) a serial bike swapper and tinkerer.

Anjantom,

Very interesting. Sounds like a sweet setup. When you next up Haldon?

Probably next weekend (we're in the isle of Wight this week - no bike either 🙁).

Drop me a message/email and I'm sure we can arrange to meet up.

My fatty is a Pivot LesFat: fully gnarboned out, and approx same weight as yours.

The Stache is just such a capable bike. It belies it’s geo and fork travel.

yes, it’s nimble and a whole load of other good things.

Pipiom,

That's extremely interesting to hear! My main bike was my 160mm full sus and I bought my fatbike as a bit of a punt but have absolutely loved it. It has since been upgraded with nicer wheels, forks etc. I think what stunned me is just how capable (even in rigid form) the fat bike can be. It take some pretty serious terrain for it to not be quicker than my full sus and anything remotely smooth and a full sus wont see which way its gone. The traction and momentum that it affords are just awesome.

So...not long after I became aware of the Stache. I was curious if it might blur the lines of fatbike and full sus and be the ultimate do it all machine. That short rear end giving it that flickability and nimbleness more akin to my full sus.

On a scale of fatbike to 160mm full sus where does the the Stache fall? Is it so capable that the full sus can be sold (It seems pointless keeping it for the odd uplift day a few times a year) or is it very similar to the fatbike but not enough to warrant having both?

Sorry long post and the kind offer above of a local ride will probs my tell me more but just trying to figure of I can justify getting one or if I'm just being silly!

John

Hi Peanut, I'm 5'10 so I'm sure it will be alright.

I will probably struggle for 5, but could do more 5:30-6?

Just wanted to day a big thanks to Peanut for being kind enough to let me loose last night on his Trek Stache. It was an awesome ride, such a great bike!! It was set up in single speed but I tried my best to hide my exhaustion. Definitely need one and definitely different to the fatbike. Felt so nimble and responsive. I think it might be time.to say goodbye to my full sus.
