A riding friend has recently got a Trek Powerfly, but wants to fit a bottle/cage for shorter rides. There are no bottle bosses, I'm struggling to see where it can fit?
one of these:

My thoughts so far:
- The 'most convenient' place would be if the battery itself had bottle bosses on the top of it. It doesn't and I'm not going to suggest trying to drill into it. I assume its a sealed unit, so mounting from the inside of the case is out? Unless it were possible to glue/bond one on strongly enough? I'm sure Bosch/Trek would look very dimly on a 'modified' battery if it came to warranty
- Aside from the not-at-all circular hydro-formed top tube never being intended for clamping something around it, its a trek, I'm thinking it may well be very thin walled? Unless there is some very well engineered solution for top tube mounting?
- They're running the dropper as far into the frame as it goes (opted for the bigger frame), so with the saddle/dropper dropped, at full rear wheel travel, there isn't room for a bottle cage under the back of the saddle
- Though there'd be room to sneak one in under the front of the saddle even when dropped, they've not got the standover space to get feet on the floor when things get tricky
- It uses Treks indented steerer tube spacers to make up its steering bump stop system. Ideally this wants to stay as it is (it helps in stopping the bike trying to fall over when wheeling it), as they find manhandling the 52lb bike around challenging in difficult terrain
- Its got 35mm handlebar clamp diameter, of the quick look I've had of handlebar mounted bits, its looking like it needs 31.8mm bars? (and stem). Besides, unless it could be sneaked at one side of the headtube somehow, its going to limit the view of the front wheel?
- Not so keen on steerer cap mounted solutions, limiting the view of the front wheel, and very protruding into the cockpit area. Can't be good for knees in a crash/nearly OTB scenario?
- Its fitted up with full length mudhugger's f/r. I'm thinking DIY mounting a cage onto the long rear, is going to make it snap zip-ties for breakfast and in time, snap the mudhugger?
- I've suggested specialized SWAT bib shorts, but a) they don't like the idea of bibshorts, and b) its yet another complication to just going out for a quick spin
- They're not so keen on a running style waist mounted water bottle holder. But is this the last option?
What else, however out the box, might work?

Have to remove strap everytime you want a drink but it's quick and easy.
Saves trying to bodge something and just remove the strap when not needed.
How long are the short rides? can’t imagine you’d need much to drink on a less than 2 hr ebike ride? Bottle of water in a back pocket?
Its not they need a bottle, its that they want one ...
Having been dismissive of mounting a cage to a frame tube where there are no bosses (all I'd come across previously were of the metal strap/jubilee clip kind of idea) I've come across the SKS anywhere cage. It uses a strap to mount the cage and the cage would sit against the (bottom edge of the top) tube with rubberised mounts? Anyone used one?
