Evening all,

Quick question. If my mate was to buy my XT crankset off me could he fit them to his trek marlin 2011 or would he need a new bb?

Cheers

The 2011 Marlin used a square taper bottom bracket so unless your xt cranks are very, very old then he's need a new bottom bracket.

Cheers for the quick reply. My chainset is 2011 so he'll need a new bb then. Can he get a bog standard deore and fit that?

Depends what you mean by "crankset"?
If the XT crankset is hollowtech, it should fit fine - just bear in mind the the frame has a 73mm bb shell, rather than the more common 68mm, so you will have to use less spacers.

I bought a 2011 Marlin as a donor bike - removed the drivetrain & brakes then fitted SLX all round.
Popped a Manitou tower pro fork on and I now have a cracking 29er.

Just got back from my usual Wednesday night blast round the local woods and have a huge grin on my face.

Yeah they're hollowtech 2 so I'll advise him he'll have to get a new bottom as well then. Cheers

So, you're taking the crankset off your bike, but keeping the bottom bracket cups etc?
In that case, he just needs to buy a set of cups for his bike and he's good to go.

Is he stil running the original Suntour forks?
How is he getting on with them? (I found them rather clunky when the front wheel gets of the ground - an flipping heavy too)

Yeah I've split up my hardtail to sell so he's potentially having the cranks and chainrings.

Yeah he's still running the forks, he has to take them apart every few rides to remove all the dirt that has got inside as they stop working. He's looking to get rebas or something similar

Can definitely recommend the Manitou tower pro fork - 300 quid, but worth every penny.
