hi all

Searched the forum but couldnt find my answer

Bought a 2nd hand aluminium superfly. Steering was really stiff so changed the bearings like for like and the problem is the same! Adjust too tight and the steering is stiff. Too loose and theres loads of play in the bearings.

Can anyone advise the correct size lower bearing? Its a 2016 superfly 5.

Also, when measuring the frame for the bearing, should the bearing protrude slightly from the headtube like the top does? If it does then i need a bearing much deeper than i can find for myself. Approx 12mm.

Thanks in advance

Matt

I think ive answered my own question. When sat in place the lower bearing is recessed in to the frame by a good 3 or 4mm.

That means that when i tighten the headset, the bottom of the frame is tightened against the crown race instead of the bearing.

But i already have quite a tall bearing so i dont know how to resolve this?

To get the right one you will need to know the bearing angle angles (normally 36 or 45, inner and outer can be same or different) OD, ID and height.

It could also have the wrong crown race fitted to the fork, some are quite thick if the bearing is recessed into the frame. Bearing is normally recessed in the head tube, the the crown race will space the fork down enough to clear the frame.

Off the top of my head superfly uses 41mm upper, 52mm lower (I would measure though). Is your fork steerer 1 1/8-1.5 taper or 1 1/8 with a big crown race that fits the 1.5 bearing

Standard E2 lower bearing is 8mm depth by my measurements, if that helps at all.

Thanks for the replies guys.

My lower bearing is indeed a 52 and 8mm tall. Im fitting a carbon rigid fork so it maybe its the crown race thats unsuitable? Oddly though it isnt removable from the steerer. Its aluminium but kind of moulded into the carbon steerer tube.

The fork that came with the bike (bike was bought used so cant be certain its the right one) was 1 1/8 straight steerer with a big crown race fitted. The new fork has a tapered 1 1/5 steerer. Oddly though both forks are stiff to turn when fitted.

Can anyone recommend a compatible crown race? That sounds like the next logical thing to try.

Thanks
