hi , am hoping to tour the alps in my van next year for 5 weeks ish , would like to hike or bike all over , problem is i am worried about leaving the dog in the van when i ride , if i leave windows open will things or she get nicked etc , or will she get too hot as can't leave windows all way down . Has anyone done something similar ?? thanks
Nobbyq,
please don't ....
Dogs have a hard time regulating body temperature when it's hot. 10 minutes in a too hot car is enough to kill your dog!
Friends or family where you are able to 'park' the dog for 5 weeks?
Hiking and camping: I take my Border Collie with me. But he has problems in the summer sleeping in the van. Too hot.
Mountain biking: I leave the dog with relatives.
All day on the trail the dog would be dead after 3 days. In the van after a couple hours. Also with windows down.
Please look for a place where you can leave the dog for 5 weeks.
Everything else will be stress.
Or the end of your dog!
What Andreas said, leaving your best friend in the van simply isn't an option I'm afraid. You'll either have to leave the dog at home, or amend your plans to things the dog will be able to join you on - most love hiking anyway, subject to size and age!
hi guys , i not planing on taking her on bike , i do that on short trips not big ones , and i was thinking of a locked box outside van os similar that open , i never leave her in van long anyway !
We have taken our dog on many alpine trips - full GR5, GR58 and Via Francigena to name a few. She loved every trip but you can't overstate that they were managed around the dog in terms of distances walked, rest breaks and food stops. For the fabulous amount of time you have I would give some serious thought to doing one of the longer treks and leaving the bike behind. A 5 week journey through or across the alps is utterly magical and more so with a dog. In fact I am uber jealous just thinking about the endless possibilities.
It goes without saying you can't leave your dog in the van. It will die, quickly. I think leaving the dog out of the van/in a cage is very risky and would not contemplate it.

great proposal!
Hiking!
locked box outside van
fear this won't work. Sun / shade. Mean people. Very mean people.
You come back and the dog is gone...
Proposal from kormoran-bloke:
yes!
Do the hiking trips with my Border Collie as well. That's fun.
Mountain biking: the short home trail stuff I do with the dog.
But bike trips like the GTJ (Jura) - not possible with the dog.
