I'm a student in UK and I have recently bought a bike from here which I am planning to take with me back home when I go back during the Easter break in March. It will be checked in as sports equipment on my flight.
I am in seach for a travel insurance which will cover any damage to the bike for the flight. I called the airlines (Monarch) to ask if their insurance will cover any possible damage but they told me that there is no cover for bicycles.
I have also contacled Evans Cycles insurance and they said that their policy would not cover it since the bike will not return to UK and I assume this will be the case with most insurance companies.
Does anyone have any similar experiences or some helpful advice since I don't really now where to look.
thanks
Alex
Send it with a courier is about the only way to get insurance and then generally only to 1000.
You're coming back to the UK? How on earth would the insurance company know you weren't planning on bringing the bike back with you?
We managed to get some one-way travel insurance through STA travel, and I'm pretty sure our sports equipment was covered.
Pack the bike properly.
But surely its covered by the airline, as per your luggage?
Liability for lost and damaged baggage is limited under the Montreal Convention which governs airlines around the world. We would always recommend that you contact your own insurance company as your policy may be more comprehensive than that of our liability under the Montreal Convention (please see our 'terms and conditions'), so please make sure you are adequately insured before you travel.
Check what is covered for free, and see whether its worth needing more.
Most travel insurances aren't going to cover it, check what their single item limit is.
assuming you're currently a UK resident, and you're coming home after easter just get any old holiday travel insurance policy that includes sports equipment. Just 'cause you're not stating at a hotel at the other end doesn't mean it's not a holiday..
Hey guys thanks for the replies.
The insurances I have been checking most of them have a max cover per single item of about 200-250 GBP.
I have checked STA travel mentioned above and they offer an insurance that covers one flight only, which suits my case, but it also has that max amount per single item.
Also, I when I asked for the Evans cycles insurance I let them know that I am not planning to bring the bike back since I thought that in case it gets damaged they would like to observe the damage in person. I don't have any experiences with insurance claims so I don't know how it works.
Come on there must be a way to insure my bike for the flight...
Most travel insurances aren't going to cover it, check what their single item limit is.
and then take you bike apart into the required number of pieces
Dogtag sports insurance? Just get cover for a 1 day riding holiday 😉
