I don't normally bother insuring the bikes, but with the current airport problems I'd like some travel insurance which will cover both our bikes if they go missing on our upcoming flight to Portugal. They're not super expensive, £1500 Free Rangers, so say £2k in the box with helmet and shoes etc.

Any recommendations?

My house insurance covers them worldwide. Might be worth checking

Our doesn't cover bikes - or rather I've not put them on the policy, so I'd have to pay extra to change that. Plus I was going to buy travel insurance for myself anyway....

I never found travel insurance that had high enough values for anything beyond BSOs.

If there is, that’s interesting.

British Mountaineering Council insurance shows a bicycle limit of £1500 if that is sufficient. Covers other items separately. They have real people in the office in Manchester if you want to ask questions too. Also know people who have had to claim in the event of accidents and they have sorted hospital, repatriation etc. and just done it, no quibbles more like someone asking if they have everything they need.

So just been on the phone to Direct Line about our house insurance and they specifically don't cover the bikes once we hand them over to the airport. Cover only starts again when we get them handed back to us!

We would have to chase the airport for recompense if they never made it to the plane.

Fairly sure my bike specific policy with ETA covers travel. You can pay monthly so may be able to sign up for one month. Would be about fifteen quid per bike

Snowcard do cover bikes.

Just been reading their policy - unclear about in transit cover, so dropped them an email...

OK, heard back from Snowcard:

Yes, bikes are covered in checked in baggage. The important thing to do is get a 'property irregularity report' before leaving the airport if there has been damage This is required in the event of a claim and airlines can be tricky providing reports once you are home.

Will take out a policy.

You looked at Yellow Jersey?

I've been with yellow Jersey the last few years, I'm out of cover at the moment but need to sort it out this weekend. Previous years unless you took out extra bike insurance I don't think the bikes were covered by anything beyond normal baggage cover (so £500 per item limit or what not). The additional was iirc the usual bike only policy so painfully expensive and only available as an annual policy.

I'd not payed a lot of attention in honesty as they were covered on the house insurance in previous years.

I think this year it will be Sports cover direct for me because I can at least do a single trip policy with the bike covered but I've shopping around to do.

Although with our Home Insurance (Direct Line) they specifically weren't covered in transit whilst flying, so if the airport looses them, tough. Hence the hunt for someone with proper cover.
