Anyone recommend a travel insurance provider that allows mountain biking as standard?

I checked the first few on the comparison site but they either disallow it or want a top up

Is it better to get seperate a specific MTB policy and a cheap travel insurance one?

To be honest I didn't know it was a thing, last annual trip one I had I never checked it was only when I skimmed the docs to find the policy number I noticed mountain biking was excluded... ooops

Cheers

I've got worldwide travel insurance with AXA through a bank account (+ European breakdown cover) The travel insurance does cover MTBing, even abroad (I double checked before I went to Le Gets).
Cost me £15 a month though but I'll let you know how it goes after I put a claim in shortly for 2 cancelled holidays in quick succession.

Some, like the Post Office Travel Insurace cover mountain biking as standard, but the wording is fairly vague - just says "Moutain Biking" which on the face of it is great, but as you've done if you delve into the T's and C's of other providers they have all sorts of exclusions which mean it's not really mountain biking at all, but sort of riding a bike with a suspension fork to the shops really. I read though everything on the Royal Mail site and couldn't find the 'catch' but didn't use them because I assumed there has to be one somewhere.

Personally I use World Nomads, they're a backpackers insurance co really so they don't cover a lot of personal possessions like a standard policy might, but they cover cancellation, loss of documents etc to a decent level and if you pay a bit extra Mountain Biking covering lift assistance, downhill etc all the things that can trip you up. Like others they don't cover racing unless you pay a lot more - so if you're off the whistler and fancy you chances on Phat Wednesday best check first. They're much cheaper for me then the usual Dog Tag / Snow Card providers.

I also have travel insurance via my bank that's good for normal shit like theft, missed flights etc so I can pick and choose if something goes wrong.

I never carry any for europe. You get healthcare under reciprocal arrangements for the same cost as here - they only thing you don't get is repatriation.
