I'm eyeing up the new 2018 model Transition Scout to replace my 2012 Nukeproof Mega. I'm a pretty average rider, mainly riding trail centres (Hamsterley is my local) with some natural rides and occasional races thrown in. The lads I ride with seem to think I've had some kind of meltdown looking at a bike with less than 150mm rear travel. Any Scout owners able to give an insight into where the limits of the scout are? Spent many a happy hour blatting about on my Blue pig, but I fear I'm getting softer after living with the comfort of rear squish!
Or what would be more helpful, does anyone know of any places in the north east with a scout demo? My LBS has a patrol, but apart from sizing I can't see it helping much in terms of ride? Any kindly Scout owners who ride Hamsterley as well?
Cheers
Andy
The Scout is a brilliant, very capable little bike - I'm a big fan of mine.
I've been there and done the 160mm travel gnarrpoon and they're ace on the right trails, but a bit dull on tamer stuff in my opinion I sold that and rode hardtails for a few years and ended up with a run out 2017 Scout and it seems to be a happy medium for me. I've taken it to the local DH trails and didn't really miss my Demo. It's great for mucking about on.
Only downside is they're a bit porky and I think the 2018 ones are heavier again. On paper they're a bit daft (chubby, not much travel) but in reality I think they're ace.
Can't tell you how it rides I'm afraid but I've got a 2018 scout frame sat in the garage waiting to be built to replace an Orange alpine 160.
The frame feels comparable in weight to the orange so if the build comes out around the same I'll be happy.
I have a Patrol - but as much as I love it, I think for my skills and general riding 90% would be just as good on a Scout. I’m lucky though - I have a hardtail as well, so choose bike depending on mood and location.
We have a 2017 Patrol and a 2015 Scout. The Scout climbs better IMO. The Scout can go anywhere the Patrol goes, just need to pick your lines a bit more carefully on the nastier stuff.
PS: My Scout runs 150mm up front.
Thanks guys, I started to worry I might find myself underbiked for trips to the lakes etc, but it sounds like I shouldn't have any troubles. I realise I'm not going to be able to plow though though everything and not feel a thing, but hoped I'd be able to at least keep up with the long travel crew!
Ride mine in the lakes, various trail centres and done Ardrock twice. Would imagine you'll be fine on it 👍
Had a Scout and now have a Patrol
The Scout was great, very capable, great climber, good all round, only reason i got a Patrol was because i got offered a great deal and wanted to try one, would have another Scout in a flash
My friend still has his Scout and he's happy throwing it and himself down Bike Park Wales black runs with no issues
Enjoyed their website. Makes me want a Throttle.
And 😀

The official Transition suspension setup video is class. It's the one with the beercans!
Honestly, I’m looking at 130mm bikes in the Peaks with riding covering Lakes, Dales and everything else.
Raced for two years on mine, sure its not a bulldozer of a bike but it certainly holds its own. The 2018 is slacker and slightly bigger than previous versions, im sure you'll love it.
I'm planning on doing an EWS on my 2018 Smuggler. I may die but I'm sure I wont. Scout looks grand
I've gone from a 2017 Patrol to the 2018 Scout and I love it. It's proper capable. Longer wheel base and reach than last years patrol and I definitely prefer it. I really think the shorter offset fork makes a difference to the handling, it rails corners like no other bike I've ridden. Fun, playful and plenty of travel. Also the 2018 Scout comes with a proper shock with a piggy back compared to previous incarnations. I live in the lakes, and haven't taken it into the mountains proper yet but have no qual about its ability. I've been riding steep techy woodsy enduroy type stuff on it and its ace. Oh and the Habenero Orange is even better in the flesh!
