What's the TPT like? Is it your standard high traffic path built with crushed limestone etc? I'm thinking some of it (say, Sheffield side to Glossop) and I'm wondering what tyres would suit.

Bit near me (between Barnsley and Sheffield) has been tarmaced in places so what tyres is anyones guess!!Some is smooth as you like while other bits are like you say, crushed limestone.

What bike? Mountain bike?

Fast rolling, skinny things I'd say. Semi slicks if it's dry. Most of it between Sheffield and Glossop is hard, smooth and gravelly with occasional tarmac sections (like the bit on road over the Woodhead). Mostly typical fire road stuff.

the bit along the Longdendale valley is hard pack gravel, you typical disused railway. Higher up on the old snow road its a rough track for a while, then onto Wood head Road and then moorland track next to road.

hope that helps

It'll be on a mountain bike, yes.

I've got some 2.1 DTC Nevegals on at the moment - I was thinking of one of those on the front, with a borrowed and well worn Maxxis Ignitor on the rear, which would give a knobbly front and almost semi slick rear tyre.

That said, I have got some horrible Schwalbe semi slicks somewhere - Marathons I think. They are sketchy if there's any mud though.

Oher tyres I have kicking about are Tioga Factory XCs. Don't think the 2.4 RQ or Fat Alberts will be called for.

There has been quite a lot of tarmac put down between Penistone and Wharncliffe in the last 2-3 weeks, the bit over the top to Hadfield has been "improved" as well but if it is wet you get covered in black crap from the old railway line surface, most people I see past our house who look like they're doing the whole thing are on slick or semi slick tyres. The only time a bit more grip may be required is if you're going W to E up the climb from Woodhead over the Tunnel and down to Dunford.
