Will be in St Helens next week, with bike, so where can I go ride after work ?   Somewhere within maybe an hour's drive at most.

I'm not aware of any trails around St Helens.

Rivi or Delamere Forest are probably the nearest.

Rivi would probably best as there's loads of XC & some man made stuff at Healey Nab.

I'm not sure about Delamere,from my experience some local knowledge would help there

There is Bickerstaffe trails just off the M58 at the other end of the Rainford bypass from St Helens. It’s a short 1 1.5 k loop that you repeat with some jump sections, not been for a couple of years mind.

Welcome to Merseyside mountain biking, where everything is an hour's drive away.

Rivington or Delamere like Bustapoke says would be OK drives after work. Delamere you'd need to get on the heat map beforehand to figure out a good route. Llandegla is potentially a good hour's drive away if you wanted to sail around a trail centre, fast big roads most of the way but choked in evening rush hour.

Thanks for the replies.   Llandegla would be good. Will have a look at Rivington Pike & Delamere too.   It's not an area I've ever ridden, so was clueless as to where to go.

There's a local club to St Helens called The Woollybacks who have a few local loops with riders going out most days of the week, post up a message here;

Just had an hour's blast around Delamere Forest. Plenty of trails in the woods, ride up the main gravel paths & go on down the trails in the woods. Not bad for a quick ride.

Coed Llandegla tomorrow perhaps.
