Just moved. Feeling lost without my local trail knowledge and van dribbling diesel so not using it till it's fixed.

Anyone got any route suggestions for me?

Also, any good local LBS in the area?

I recently had an interesting ride along Monarch's Way which is to the East of Old Sarum. Also circumnavigated Boscombe Down because I was curious. Years ago we did a nice route that took in the Woodford Valley.

I'm not a local but hopefully some will see your thread. 🙂

Edit: Once you have wheels I can highly recommend the Wylye Valley for stunning scenery.

Cheers CG. You back in Winchester these days or still further up the m3? Just fancy a bluebell off-road sportive next spring......

There is some riding out that way and towards netherhampton / the race course. Not that local but ride out that way periodically guided by others who know the area better than I do. it seems I have not managed to record any of them in strava.

I'm South of Winchester currently but ride all over the place! CFH should be able to recommend a Salisbury lbs, he can probably suggest some routes too! Also Anna B but not sure if she's on here much these days.

I would recommend a book called 'Mountain Bike Guide Wiltshire' by Ian White. His routes are interesting, he includes some history in the narrative together with points of interest.

Stonehenge cycles in Salisbury, they should be able to put you in touch with SRAM. I'm in Amesbury so not far but currently broken.

Strava segment search or heatmap to find routes. Big problem with trails being overgrown though.

Shssssh don't tell everyone 😉
Most of these will require wheels:

Grovely Wood, out from Wilton (Not ridden it yet though)
Great Ridge, Wylye Valley.
Larkhill Ranges, when no firing (No Red Flags flying) SPTA Monthly Newsletter Also DIO are on Twitter and Tweet when ranges are open.
Imber Range Path, majority is BOAT or Bridleway. Imber Range Perimeter Path
Tidworth Freeride

There maybe some one Salisbury Plain Area Mountain Bikers (SPAM) a bit closer than me that can help SPAM

PS. If you look at the SPTA Newsletter Imber Ranges will be open to the public at the end of August 😀

My Mum and sister live in Salisbury so I've done a bit around there. There are LOADS of routes but they tend mostly to be bridleways following old drove roads and you definitely need an OS map of the area, which will reveal a lot to you. I do remember one excellent ride I did out through Grovelly Woods, south a couple of valleys then back along the old drove road to the race course. Actually a crosser might be a more useful tool for most of the riding around there - faster and able to cover greater distances.

I've been using this book as a guide since moving to Wiltshire as start base for rides. A good book just be cautious if you do the ride through Longleat Forest, somebody built Stalag Center Parcs and erected a ruddy great fence across one of the tracks 😥 You can navigate round it though 🙂

If you want to email me I can send you some strava links if that would help.

Incidentally the best singletrack I've seen in the area is the inner rampart of old Sarum, I've been wondering if people do ride it especially when you look at some of the roll ins. Strava heatmap suggests not though.

Quite a bit of the singletrack in collingborne woods mentioned above had been destroyed by logging last time I passed though, it was probably about 3 months back so I'm not sure on the current situation.

Thanks for link to this thread CG, I didn't see. OP there is loads of great riding round Salisbury, I think so anyway. I cycle round here loads, it is all nice bridle way and by way, I have routes from 8 to 45 miles. I cycle with the Dorset Rough Riders from time to time, and as Dave says, Salisbury ride this Sunday, though starting Downton! (Dave! you're making me get in my car…. 😉 ) If you let me know how far you want to cycle I can give you a couple of routes.

Currently Chandlers. How do you find the riding around CC? I often head up towards Cheesefoot Head (use car partly) so that opens up loads of routes. Where do you ride?

I'm to the west of Salisbury and south of Warminster. There isn't much in the way of singletrack but there plenty of bridleways to explore.

Mainly out from CC to Cheesefoot, bits of SDW. Have a few routes via Marwell or Tywford and string stuff as we go, usually 3 -7 guys aged 41 - 51 medium pace and ride for fun. Summer time we try and do 25 ish on a Weds night but drops to 18 - 19 during the winter mud.

Done a route from Farley mount and back earlier in the summer and last we we rode to QEP where we'd dropped a car to get back.

We usually do a long weekend away somewhere in May, mid-Wales was the last one but missed this year as I normally organise it and I've been off the bike for nearly a year after getting knocked off my road bike in May 2013.

I've lead quite a few rides around the Salisbury area for Newforce.

We often start at Whiteparish and loop up through Bentley Wood (some nice singletrack in there), Winterslow, picking up the Monarchs Way to Broughton Down, Tytherley, Lockerley and back via Dean Hill. You could pick this loop up via the Monarchs way from Old Sarum

I've also done some great rides to the North of this loop, again off the Monarch Way but heading up to loop round the Wallops, Palestine, Georgia, Oklahoma (no, i've not flicked the page on the map!) Clatford Oakcuts, over towards teh river, Danebury Hill (Bivvied here in the snow once!)and back via Broughton.

In the other direction, there's some good stuff around BroadChalke, between the Oxdrove and Compton Down, which could lead you on to CRanborne Chase.

So, plenty to do really!

I've just seen that Newforce are tweeting future rides. That's very helpful for people who live on the periphery, be great if all clubs did it.

Now how easy are they to find those singletracks in Bentley Wood? Never really explore East of Salisbury, maybe now is a good time.

Just pick anything thats not a gravel track (all cheeky of course - avoid dog walking time and sunday lunchtime). Actually I think the one down the left hand side is legit.

Apologies all, hadn't spotted this before!

I can certainly recommend a chat to the nice people in Stonehenge Cycles. Some very well informed folks in there to talk to. 😉 Also, check out http://www.sarumvelo.org/

WRT trails around Old Sarum, not really my specialist area, I'm afraid. More of my riding has been further north, around Netheravon area, or to the Eastern edge of the Plain.
