You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
Since moving to Chippenham around 2 years ago now, I haven't found any local wood singletrack type trails, just Bridle path stuff, any locals know of anything?
Fitness is through the floor currently, so looking for something just just spin the legs on, is Leigh Woods worth a visit? seems about a 45min drive. I used to enjoy a spin around Swinley and knew all the off piste stuff there, something like that would be ideal for now to get the fitness back on track whilst being mildly interesting, ie that isn't a simple bridle path.
Woods behind Nationwide, Swindon???
Head towards salisbury plain? There used to be some decent stuff in Erlestoke woods. There was a british DH run there bout 20 years back.
Oh. Also. Savernake forest?
West Woods SW of Marlborough could be worth exploring for you, not a vast area, but large enough for some cheeky jumps and stuff to have been built last time I was there (couple of years). Probably about 30mins from Chippenham.
Salisbury Plain is a reasonable shout, just a bit windswept every time I've been there!
Not sure I'm ready for the famous Nationwide trails 😀
The other options all look like they're worth giving a go, so thanks for the input, just need to decide on which one to go for tomorrow now!
There’s a little riding between Bradford and bath. Conkwell and browns folly but I think the best single track is earlstoke woods.
Longleat and shearwater lake has some too but not been over that way for ages.
Not sure if the spam club are still going ? They used to run the Salisbury plain challenge amongst other things
Nobody rides the folly. It is not allowed. Nobody drives to the Crown at Bathford and rides a loop.
The woods by the Uni are not allowed either
Conkwell is allowed, at least according to the signs
Went to west woods, good bits took a while to find, very very much fun but short
Leigh woods is worth a visit for sure. When everywhere else is a shytefest you can get a singletrack fix. When it’s drier, lots of steep off piste
Go North West to Dursley, young man...
Google is your friend , as is Bigfoot Mtb Club
Woods above North Nibley - jumps, dh's, singletrack. - 40mins away
Woods above Dursley singletrack xc -40mins away
Combine both of the above into loop for a 3/4hr ride with around 4000ft of climbing....once youve found all the secret trails.
Cranham - single track xc and some steep dh tracks - 50 mins away
Bath/conkwell - steep tech rocky trails -25mins away
Longleat - other side of road from bikepark, lots of xc singletrack -40 mins away.
West woods - a few bits
Earlestoke - nice xc singletrack
If you allow 60mins driving, then that opens up FOD, pontypool, wylie valley, and other south wales stuff.
the ridgeway/marlbrough downs is a good ride as is the wandsdyke/pewsey vale.
In all seriousness, if you're looking for an hours blast to retrieve /keep your fitness levels, you can do worse than the Croft Trail near Nationwide in Swindon
4000' in 45min!!!!!! That's 1.48' per second if ascending only, double that to nearly 3' per second if equal ascending and descending in a loop!!!!!! It can be steep out that way &.not kind to someone wanting to regain their lost fitness.
When I visited the woods behind Nationwide I was very impressed by what they've done with the space their. Knock out a few laps, up your pace, you can get a workout their for sure.
3 to 4 hrs 🙂
Just using it as an example of amount of trails on that area. Actually both nibley and dursley have singletrack loops on top of thier respective hills with hardly any climbing.
Just go explore.
