So looking for a cheapish HT for a mix of red route trails (nothing to taxing) and a bit of 30+ mile rides around the South Downs with quite a lot of hills.

Prefer 1x11 or 1x12 and room for internal dropper.

So guess nothing ‘too’ aggressive.

2nd hand is fine, as long as in good condition.

Was looking at the following so far:

Nukeproof Scout 29
Marin San Quentin - too slack maybe?
Orange Crush - too slack again?
Genesis Tarn
Vitus bikes

Looking through classifieds online there are plenty of options so opinions greatly appreciated as not had a HT for years!

If I can spend less then that’s good!

1x10 but still good value: https://www.merlincycles.com/felt-surplus-30-plus-mountain-bike-2018-146254.html

I got a Trek Roscoe 8 earlier in the year and find it great.

10% off now as new models are coming out (which massively increase the price for little gain in my opinion) which takes it to £990 which is great value for what you get.

Good drivetrain but questionable fork and brakes on a £1000 bike surely?

Vitus Sentier is pretty fun and feels quite efficient to pedal. Modern geo but nothing crazy. If you can find the model with revelations on that sells for about £1300 secondhand within budget that’s pretty decent. The £999 one isn’t bad value new though either.

Seeing as Brant has become uncharacteristically coy

The new Scandal fits your requirements, out in few weeks, has a great spec.

What’s the sizing like on the Sentier? Large for 5ft 11?

Definitely large for 5’11. I’m 5’9 on a medium but I deliberately bought s slightly shorter bike so it’s playful
on pump tracks and mucking about jumping on / off stuff as well as some trail stuff. I’ve got a big fs bike for rockier stuff that’s properly long in the reach. The Vitus is a lot of fun.

I've a second gen Cotic Solaris (pre-Longshot but not first gen) that I barely ride and was thinking about selling.

I got a good spec (Hope wheels, SLX 1*11, Pikes) Bird Zero TR for £650 second hand. Would fit your requirements nicely.
Could gets second hand Sonder Transmitter too?

I like the look of a Bird Zero but they don’t seem to come up very often!

Sonder Transmitter is also a good call -
as would be something like an Orange Clockwork 137 secondhand

To be fair that Boardman looks like a pretty decent spec for the money for a new bike at £1k - as an all rounder. Not slack as such but not silly steep either. Reba / 12 speed / level t’s / tubeless 25mm internal diameter wheels.

Shame about the tan wall tyres....

Plenty of Vitus HTs up for auction on EBay from Wiggle/CRC themselves, minor damage or used once.

Bump for an old thread as Christmas is done and dusted so time to have another look as got the cash waiting.

Decided to go 2nd hand as if I decide a HT is not for me I can sell it on and hopefully lose minimal money.

Vitus, Sonder or Bird TR look like solid options. Just got to find the right bike local (ish).

Seen a couple of Nukeproof Scouts - not sure how they compare to the others.
