Following on from a previous thread I've decided to give a track pump a try. Looking around I have found the Birzman Grand Maha which is an extra tall version. At 6'2" with lower back issues the extra height appeals to me. Thing is, it's a road pump. So am I going to be pumping forever to inflate a 27.5 x 2.4 tyre? Or will the extra length compensate for the narrower barrel?
IMO a track pump will be high enough volume that you won't notice a difference - I wasn't aware they were marketed as road or MTB specific.
The pressure gauge probably won't be much use at low pressures.
Also consider if you want a tubeless inflator - I have a lifeline pump with tubeless reservoir that's big and effective, though it doesn't look as nice as the one you're considering.
Pretty sure pumping performance won't be compromised by it being a road pump - just might not quite get the gauge accuracy at lower pressures. If that bothers you..
Yeah, some models have a higher volume barrel and a gauge with a lower max pressure to be more accurate at low pressures for MTB. I think it will prob be ok though.
@kelron That lifeline one seems a good price. Do you happen to know how tall it is? And can you bypass the tank for topping up pressures?
Just been looking at the Topeak Joeblow Booster and it seems to tick a lot of boxes with regards height/pressures/tubeless etc. Quite a bit more coin though.
DO NOT buy a mountain bike pump if you plan to inflate road tyres with it; you'll need muscles like a gorilla as the barrel will be fatter.
The Decathlon track pumps are good value and work very nicely.
Yes you can bypass the tank. The handle height is about 70-120cm, I'm also tall and have to stoop a bit to push it all the way down. Not sure any pumps will be much taller.
Cheers for that @kelron the Birzman says it is 757mm and the Topeak 740mm so both are a bit taller.
I've got an SKS road trackpump, and wouldn't recommend it for a high volume mtb tyre as it takes forever and a day to inflate, especially from flat.
I had one of the Lezyne HV mountain bike track pumps, and it never got near road tyre pressures, so I got their HP road version and that works fine with both types of tyre
Normal track pump - that's all I use for all my bikes. Takes no-time for the MTB, and pressure accuracy is good (Blackburn).
Same goes for me have used £20 odd Bonty track pumps for years 110psi for road or 10/15 for fat tyres or semi-fat or normal MTB tyres never had problem with either might take few more pumps for fat tyres from flat but hardly wearing my arms out now a mini pump out on the trails is a different ball game.
