I just bought an expanding tow rope for 8 quid off eBay to tow our little un around. Just got to make a couple of brackets to fix it to his & my MTBs. 😁

Is that the South African invention? The cable retracts into a holder, which you bolt to the seatpost. With a bit of practice two unevenly-matched cyclists can make good progress with the stronger one in front.

Interested to see how you get on ( though I also think you may have spent way too much)

I've done shit loads of towing my kid's (bikes 😎) over the years. Done well it makes for an excellent day out all round. The kids get some uplift and loads of downhill action. I get a proper workout and the missus gets a great day cycling with the family.
Been doing stuff like llandegla black and north face trail since he was around seven.
Gave us loads more options on the fire roads from hell in saalbach as well.

Go for it.

I've got one of these. not as cheap as your ebay solution. I just hook it on the saddle on my bike and use a carabiner clipped into a loop tied round the stem on my boys bike.

I always used to worry about a bungee coming unhooked from the saddle rails and taking out my lad's eye.

I couldn't find one on ebay that wasn't for a car, that seemed as if it would be too strong to expand enough.

The purpose made ones are expensive, that bicyclebungee is a pisstake. But I found you can get some sort of rescue cable from the canoeing world for £25, which seemed reasonable.

In reply to Jam Bo about the TowWhee bungees, I took on the UK import for TowWhee recently, so anyone wanting the best tow bungee from a UK source should head over to Gone Biking Mad.

If this plug isn't allowed please delete and accept my apologies.

Mines for towing a car. I was worried about it not being stretchy enough ( after I'd ordered it 🙄) but it seems pretty much perfect. It's got locking hooks on each end & is rated up to 2 tons😁 . Our little un really struggles on the uphills, he's got a Halfords Mx lookalike . He wants a proper MTB,but can't figure out the gears ( nor can his mum 🤣 ) . I can keep it in the car for incase I get stuck too. But my cars a Subaru outback,so that's unlikely. I'll report back once I've dragged him up the local hills.

I use a retractable dog lead fixed to the steerer. Has worked really well for the last couple of years.

I used a length of 5mm rope and then tied some shock cord onto it every 20cm or so along the middle section such that the rope pulled taught just before the shock cord. This stopped the rope dropping into my rear wheel and takes the shock out of taking up the slack.

As for attaching it to the bike, following a suggestion on an earlier thread on here, one end has a loop that goes around my saddle, the other end of the rope then just goes round the back of the steerer then either one or two wraps around the stem and incoming rope and then over to one of the handlebar grips where it's simply held against the grip. Takes no effort to hold it, but as soon as you let go the rope comes straight off.

And that sounds like more than enough of an excuse for a photo of one of my kids on a bike:

You know when posting a link you can remove the question mark and everything after it?

Worth it for the look on the guys face when he asked me what size dog I had and I said it was for my son.

Adult seatpost, 2 old daisy-chained innertubes, over kids bars (under stem to keep central). Not very kickstrtrtrtr I know but for the few times they can't use their own legs it seems to work.

It works a treat. I just hook it onto the saddle rail, then onto a loop of inner tube that's around little uns head tube.
