Every year they announce the Tour of Britain.
Every year I go to the website to look at where it is going to go.
Every year I end up frustrated because they CAN'T MANAGE TO PUT A PROPER MAP ON THE WEB SO PEOPLE CAN ACTUALLY SEE WHERE IT GOES!

I don't want fancy designer website tricks, I want to know where to watch it.

They know the route.
They know where it's going to go.
The one thing people in Britain want to know is where it goes.

Sort it out.

It's always in the North, does a (small) wiggle around a bit of That Wales, scuttles off to East(ish) Anglia, fannies around the edge of That London. End.

Dull, except sometimes it does have Russell Downing in it.

if you down load the press pack, it usually gives you the timings at differnet speed and lots of other info as well.

It finishes at Knowsley safari park in Liverpool one night.

To be fair it's been loping though the hillier bits of Somerset the last few years. Really enjoyed the mendip section last year and will miss it this year

The route was only announced today! Give it a couple of months and there will be detailed maps and timings on the website. The organisation behind ToB is kind of busy right now with the Tour Series and then there's minor stuff like the Olympics and Tour de France so once that's created an upsurge of interest in cycling they'll do a proper launch of each stage.

Well, as it is finishing in Guildford, I will be able to stroll into town and watch the finish, as they are doing a few laps of the High Street cobbles. Should be a fun day.

Which is fine, but when the route is announced, as it was today, it would seem sensible to actually tell people where it's going. Which they never seem to achieve.

Why, in this modern age, should I be going and checking back to find out information that they could put there to start with?

Why, in this modern age, should I be going and checking back to find out information that they could put there to start with?

From their website:

More details of the 2012 Tour of Britain, including detailed stage maps and the locations of intermediate ŠKODA King of the Mountains climbs and Yodel Sprints will be revealed during a series of regional launches, beginning with the launch of Stage One on Tuesday 8th May from the Adnams brewery in Southwold, Suffolk.

Publicity and sponsorship reasons are why they don't just bang the whole route up now. It costs a fortune to stage the race, the councils and sponsors want some return for their investment so if you can get a few famous cyclists along to a launch you're guaranteed crowds and pictures and media space.

Besides which, people these days can't cope with one fell swoop of info, they want regular bitty updates like Twitter, a few pictures etc. Doing it in one block just means a wave of interest for 2 days then it all goes quiet again. By drip feeding the info, they get people coming back to the website time and again, they keep the media interested, keep the sponsors happy.

"In this modern age" as you put it, people want something new every day. Years ago, they'd just have published it in Cycling Weekly, now it's vital to keep website content fresh. And the race isn't for another 5 months anyway, I'm sure you'll find out just in time to see it... 😉
