So Ive just been talked into doing the Tour de Broads 100 mile event in August by a mate.
Never done anything like this before so slightly apprehensive and figured I may need to do some training.
Ive got a decent road bike and am comfortable doing an hour to hour and a half rides on it at the moment at a steady pace.
Do any of you have a god training plan that i can follow to help me do the 100 miles in one stint.
Also tips on clothing/food would be great too !
many thanks
Steve
it's pan flat but can be open and breezy so be as aero as possible I guess
If you can do an hour and a half already, you just keep building the distance and time in the saddle steadily, simple as that. Get up to about 80 miles a couple of weekends before the event you'll be sorted.
As for food, I always have actual food rather than gels and plain water in the bottle. When I did my first RideLondon I had two cheese rolls, two bananas and a selection of flapjack bars in my jersey pockets, plus i cadged some bits at the feed stops. Eat something every twenty miles, drink something every five.
Im 6 foot 1 and 17 stone........ Aero is a bit of a problem for me !!
You'll be in the saddle for minimum five hours, probably more like up to seven, so decent shorts with a good pad and chamois cream are, for me, a must.
I'm sure you'll look very fetching in a skin suit, just don't post any pictures 😉
🙂
IHN and decent makes of shorts to look at?
It depends on the shape of your arse and undercarriage...
Lots of people really rate Lusso, but I can't get on with them. DHB from Wiggle get good reviews too.
My two comfiest pairs are some Planet-X ones that cost less than £20, and some Assos ones that cost £100+
Go for some long rides!! I went from 60km tops to 205km over about 3 months.Sign up for the strava distance challenges between now and then for some motivation, The Grand Fondo ones were about 120km so 40km short of your goal and kicking on for the extra 20km at the end of a ride was great.
Clothing? Bibs and a top, wind jacket if it's breezy, arm warmers as an option, cap to keep the sun off as required.
Food? Proper meal the night before there is a formula somewhere for the g/Carbs per Kg Body weight that you can absorb and use, anything more you need to "dump" before you ride 😉
Try some gels and bars before the day to see what works and what doesn't as a backup but personally I tend to not eat very much on the road bike but do use torq energy in my water bottles
It's a good event, i don't know if they still have the ferry crossing of Broads in the middle, but you get a natural rest then, easy miles too, no elevation at all really.
May be worth doing some other in the lead up to it, there are the Norfolk Sportives and Boudica coming up before then
I wouldn't say it's pan flat, its not like Lincolnshire. But it's not the Lakes either.
North Norfolk coast has some elevation in it.
