Right, I'm after some 29er tyres. Ideally I'd want some slightly narrower Maxxis Shorty, with Specialized Grid type casing (a bit more than EXO). Or some softer, tougher Beavers. Hopefully you get the picture.

All the options are either too wide, or too light weight, or too hard rubber.

What is there out there that might be the ticket?

ContinMud King 29x1.8 Protection? Never tried them, but kinda fit your requirements - on paper at least?

The Rocket Ron isn't tough.

The 1.8 is too narrow? Ideally I want a 2.1-2.2.

Black Chilli Protection Conti Mtn King IIs are surprisingly good all rounders in 2.2. Early ones had really porous sidewalks, but recent ones are fine.

Edit - or what Jonny says. SE tyres are plenty tough. Shame they're stiff under the tread area too though.

Thanks,

Some good ideas there.

The Mountain Kings looks good.

And after initially discarding the Mud Kings for their 1.8 width, reading the reviews has made me reconsider.

But keep 'em coming?

Pretty sure I read a review of some new redesigned Hutchinson tyres, the Toro? Seemed to tick a few of your boxes as I really don't think you'll find any tyres that does all of those things.

The Hutchinson Toro would be a good shout, if you can find any (No UK distributor any more). The 2.35" is more like anyone else's 2.2, the 2.15 is closer to a 2". They grip well, have a reasonably sturdy carcass, and generally got rave reviews.

The Black Chilli MK2's in 2.2" width might be a good shout too. Grippier than they look in most conditions, closer to 2" than their claimed size, only thing going against them is their notorious fragility even in the Protection version. I holed one on only its second ride and that was with 40psi in it! For riding your local woods and soft loamy trails they're great, show it a rock and you'll likely do it some damage.

What is it about the 2.2 Beaver with EXO casing that isn't ticking the box?

Smashed mine around the peak district on Sunday and it was absolutely fantastic.

New Maxxis "Forekaster" looks like it could be good. Same 2.25" casing as Ardent, with a lot more agressive tread pattern...

I love my old Hutchinson toros but if you are looking for a mud tyre they might not be ideal, the tread is quite shallow and in deep mud struggles a bit. Not sure what the new ones are like

X-King is not exactly grippy - pretty amusingly drifty in turns and when braking! Mud King is skinny and grippy - not sure on toughness...
