I'm interested in one for XC and general riding/training. Like the long top tube, 2 bottle bosses, standard BB, 44mm HT. Would prefer 27.2mm seat post to the 31.6mm but maybe it can be shimmed?

Anyhow the Mk 1 650b was slated for being noodly, anyone tried the mk2 29er or know of any tests?

I know this isn't an answer to your question (hey, it's STW), but can't Burls build you something to your exact requirements for similar money?

Lovely bikes, spot on geometry and the ti 29er forks are bloody brilliant and as you say designed by burls but not welded by him...really nice buke for the money . having said that their steel 29er is tip top as well

Why not go straight to him and cut out the middle man?

That was my point. If you're worried about noodliness, they can build it stiffer too.
