Is it just a case of undoing the bolt and dribbling a few drops in or is it more complicated than this?

No obvious signs of any leaks/problems - just thought I haven't touched them in ages I should check.

They are Tektro draco if it makes any difference.

Cheers

hhmm, did think that.

How would I know if it needed topping up?

soggy feel at the lever, lever travelling further before full bite.

generally, if they feel alright then they are alright.

So - planning ahead now - if the lever starts to feel long - is it just a case of topping it up through the hole?

no, you need to bleed the brake which effectively removes the old fluid and replaces it with new.

just topping up won't affect the fluid already in the hose and near the caliper.

If you have more travel in the lever this may be because it has to move further to get the worn out pads to touch the disk.

Check the pads, if they are worn put new pads in.

If it still moves too far, and you have adjusted things like reach/bite adjustment, it may be time to put fresh oil in.

Brake oil goes off after a while (several months) and may start to feel soggy, or indeed leak.

Rather than top it up, replace the whole lot. Youtube for instructions for your model of brakes, its pretty simple if your mechanically minded.

Make sure you use the correct oil. Dot fluid does not work in brakes made for Mineral Oil and vice versa.
