I ride with a Garmin watch these days, rather than a bar/stem mounted GPS unit.
However, I do miss not being able to glance the time when riding (in long sleeves).
What I'd like is a dinky digital watch/clock that fits the top cap mount (Garmin/Wahoo/whatever).
I've spotted an analogue version, which is okay but I'd prefer digital.

I was thinking maybe a nurse's watch could work as a DIY option, but I can't find many digital ones

I just use the cheapest digital watch from Decathlon. A few turns of bar tape and strap it on. Mine has been on my utility bike for years. It still works and no one has nicked it yet.
The whole point is it they cost £10 so it's not the end of the world if someone does take it.

winston has the right answer. If you set up your data fields you can see the time and your HR zones on the handlebar without taking your hands off.
Why don't you just strap your Garmin to your bars?

I've made one today. Casio F-91W trimmed and glued to a Garmin mount. Looks alright 😉

[no room on the bar - it's a flat bar commuter/roadie/gravel and all spare space is taken up with lights/bell/etc. so it's gone on the stem]

I have a Trek 'Time' clip-on bar clock, love it for how easy it is to add on when needed. Particularly for early am rides before I need to be back at the desk for a meeting. I don't think they're made anymore but worth looking out for.
Main feature no. 1: High precision. Only loses/gains up to 3 seconds per day!
Oh also, it measures 2.8cm x 1cm, but please allow for a 3cm margin of error (and if I'm being picky, it actually says a minimum of 1cm error)

I needed something similar so cut the straps off and old solar powered watch and stuck a quad lock mount in the back. More useful than I could ever have imagined and swap it between bikes.

So for under £2 delivered it out performs the Contrôle Officiel Suisse des Chronomètres (COSC) standard!
Huh. So it does. 3 seconds a day sounded like a lot to me. Maybe it is high precision after all 😉
