I don’t usually bother with winter tyres but fathomer of this parish kindly gave me a Maxxis Shorty 3C Maxx Terra tyre months ago that I’m contemplating putting on the front, after a shitslopfest barely-in-control night ride a few weeks back. Not used a Shorty before - will it cause me utter deathness on roots and rocks in all but the shittiest of conditions? I’m on the same WTB Vigilante up front that was on it when I bought the bike 3 years ago!
2.3 or 2.5?
Shorty's are the tyre i tend to go to when i've given up and just ride slop for a long time, but i find something like an assegai or magic mary works best over winter, as it gives you that little more on roots and rocks, saying that though, a shorty up front will be manageable for most things, as from now until April you'll treat any root or rock as a potential off anyway!
Short answer, give it a try, you might not even need to adjust your riding much if you're like me and actively avoid roots and rocks that aren't good angles, as it's front you can hop over a lot of the bad stuff anyway.

2.5 shorty does fine on roots for the most part. It's a bit of a 50p to pedal though.

Ah, i just naturally thought 2.5WT, they do come up narrow, worst case you'll skoosh through the mud, just avoid areas with trees, or rocks, or tarmac ;o)
2.3 is probably more of a slip tyre. The 2.5 is more of an all-rounder.
Still, might as well chuck it in. It's not going to get any dryer out there for about 6 months.
Been on a front 2.5WT Shorty for a month now round here (Surrey Hills) - no probs on the roots, lets face it only an intermediate tyre really
If your local trails are anything like mine, I'd be getting it on there ASAP.

Sorry to be a spoilsport there is no such thing as a winter tyre, they are designed for conditions.
You could use a softer tyre in the winter as they become harder in colder weather, more noticeable below 5 degrees.

Yes. But those conditions are more likely to be in 'winter'.

Where do you ride?
As I find a Shorty iffy on the rocky/rooty off-piste around here, far better with a Mary/Wild Enduro/DHF etc.
I ride a Shorty in the wetter colder months (or simply known as Winter). Mine is the 2.5 on the front. Seems fine over roots and rocks as well. But makes a huge difference in the slop I ride. Woburn and Rushmere are my regular rides, Rushmere last week had some very soft wet areas.
I’m on a Hillbilly front / dhr2 rear and have been for a while as it’s been biblical for a few months. Local steep off piste stuff is very slippery and the Hillbilly is going a grand job. Has the edge over the Magic Mary that was on there before - allows you to brake and turn on steep slippery muddy stuff as it stays clear of mud where the Mary was clogging.
My wet season/winter tyred have been on foe a month. Shorty 2.5 FR, DHR 2 2.4 RR.
I can only dream of conditions that don't require a shorty up front.
@benpinnick - my Aether 7 has been wearing a Hillbilly for some months now if that makes you feel better. Quite bored of cleaning down muddy kit - although the riding is quite fun

Our trails are slop and mud most of the year!!
Now we can’t travel it’s worse with having to ride local and getting to sample the delights of the Golfie “super mud” never known grip like it anywhere else
