What do you guys and girls think of these? Do you think they'd be dangerous in a crash, thus trapping the foot and snapping bones etc? Just for commuting really. Guess they'd need to be tight to be effective. And no I'm not using spds. 🙂

They look fine, I've considered them before. They don't need to be particularly tight, just tight enough to stop your foot sliding around. I imagine your feet will come out easily in a crash - do you crash often whilst commuting?! I use old fashioned toe clips on my road bike.
thanks. Are they actually meant to help the foot pull and push like spd's? or just to prevent the foot moving off the pedal?
Looks like a halfway compromise. Why not proper old-fashioned toe clips? We all used to use them without snapping bones.
thanks.
A disadvantage of old fashioned toe clips is that they usually only screw to touring-style pedals. These strap things will fit to a decent set of flats.
But why not get clipless pedals and shoes? Each to their own I know, but I totally hate toe clips. I find they merge the worst of flats and clipless into one system.
I've got toe clips on my road bike too, I like them and they are easy to get out of
Plus you can walk in the shoes
I've seen fixie riders in Leeds use these a lot, although they never seem to have them tight, just jump on and ride.
If you are bothered about the safety issue you should ride flats. I guess it depends on how much you want to utilise the commute as training and correct push/pull pdealing technique vs getting there safely or whilst feeling a bit safer.
If you're going for something like that, then I reckon Power Straps are much better. OK so they're a lot more expensive but because of the way you twist into them they have effectively instant release, along with a much more positive attachment to the pedal when in use. Having been a longtime clipless user I was surprised how well they worked with normal shoes (I was using running shoes for events where I was jumping on and off the bike).
