So, I set off this morning on the "adventure" (whatever) bike, with plans to ride to Brighton down the LtB off-road route.
Didn't get very far (Sunbury) before I noticed a ticking noised from the back wheel - on further investigation, it seems that a Mavic straight pull spoke has managed to pop itself off the hub, and the hub looks a bit screwed. Hopefully LBS can salvage it.
Limped back home and thought I know, I'll stick the MTB in the car and pop down to Swinley for a quick blast (it'll be busy but it's a nice day & the wife is out anyway).
About half way round, going round a fairly innocuous set of berms, the back tyre rolls off the rim with a bang that seems to scare the shit out everybody in close proximity.
I manage to stop the bike without falling off and the tyre is still in once piece, sealant has blown all over the place and the rim is scraped to shit where I tried to stop the bike.
GARG!
Anyway - a few questions:
1) What will have caused this? Pressure to high / low? Tyre knackered anyway? Something else?
2) The rim has loads of burrs on the edges where the rim scraped the trail, but doesn't look dented. I will file the burrs off - will it be ok to try tubeless again?
3) I assume the tyre is fubarred and cannot be trusted again? It got me back to the car park, but it felt weird all the way. Maybe just because it had a tube in it, but this is only my second or third outing tubeless so not sure.
and a couple of lessons
1) if it's not your day, It's not your day.
2) even a shitty day on the bike is better than a day at work.
PS: If it was any of you lot that stopped to help - cheers.
Packed my rucksack yesterday, set an alarm for 6:30 this morning so I can get a train to Blair Atholl to do Beinn A'Ghlo circuit. Just before going to bed, I give the bike a quick check, the front tube is flat. Replaced it, though it seemed to be not punctured (and it wasn't from last weekend). Got the water and all cleaning materials for a post ride wash, even though I was meant to come back at 11PM tonight.
Wake up, take a shower, get breakfast, get dressed up, helmet and shoes are on. Take the bike off the stand, the front is flat again! Looked at the watch and just fell back to the bed. Even if I manage to replace a tube and sprint to the train station, I would have only one spare with no idea what caused two tubes to go flat.
Decided to give up and will check the tube some other day. It lets the air out, there must be something stuck. Dedicated a day to cleaning up my flat and video games...
tyre burping - too low pressure IMO
Probably was - noticed sealant coming out of sidewall when I pumped up tube so I reckon it might have had a puncture the sealant couldn't deal with which pushed it over the edge.
