sorry maybe a daft question but do you measure the diameter of the 'shaft' and if it's 8mm it's an M8?
Yes ... but that won't tell you the pitch. STD M8 is 1.25mm but on certain applications a pitch of 1mm is quite common.
It's just for shock mount bolts, does that matter?
I'd be inclined to suggest M6 as a more likely size...
Yes all you have to do is measure the diameter, 4x 2 pence pieces for M8 or 4x 1 pence pieces for M6 😯
could be a 5/16 though. (7.93) measuring accross the shaft might not help if the thread is rolled.
if it is m8 it should be 1.25 pitch so 8 threads should be 10mm apart. bit easier to measure.
if it is a standard bolt the a/f of the head will be 13mm. 5/16 will be 1/2 an inch. if it has 8.8 stamped on the head it is prolly metric
See if an M8 nut will fit on it nicely, if it does it's an M8 bolt 😀
this is all getting very complicated 😕
there isn't actually a thread, it has a smooth shaft that goes inside the bushings
pro-bolt have a handy PDF doc with a bolt finder in it.
Just print it with no scaling.
Pick it up and look at it. I it looks like a M8 bolt then it is. Works for other sizes and threads too.
ah well, m8 implies it has a metric 8mm thread. borrow some calipers off someone and measure it.
If it's a M8, it will always be first to get a round in...

Got to B&Q and try a M8 in the shop.
