Can't see a recent thread on them so.......
Backed them on kickstarted and they arrived today, have "imprinted" and fitted them.
First impressions:
Retail Packaging is well done and pretty impressive - clearly well thought out(I was expecting them just to turn up in a jiffy bag in all honesty)
Quality of the product is very good, nicely machined/anodised. I went for the premium version and am glad I did. (although I obviously haven't seen the plastic ones).
Colour of the mouldable rubber I chose was grey - wish black had been available, but it'll probably end up that colour with some use, and actually - having put it on the bike, doesn't look none too shabby!
The only thing i'm not 100% on, is the thickness of the rubber - the images on the campaign make it look chunkier/more padded than the one I've received. I like a slightly padded grip, but I'll give it a ride before I make my mind up.
Anyway, so far I'm glad I backed the project and hopefully the guys will get some traction and develop the product further - it definitely feels as though it will be a decent and comfy grip!
Anyone else got theres?
Still waiting for mine. Maybe tomorrow.
Mine turned up today too. Not imprinted or fitted them yet.
Black became available as an option later on - there was an email about it ages ago.
I agree that the quality of machining on the Alu parts seems very good, and they look like a quality product, but I also agree that the rubber seems thinner than I expected....does it expand slightly when imprinted using the mesh?
Obviously I hope they last well, but I wonder if there will be the ability to send back your aluminium sleeves to have the rubber refreshed when they do wear out? Otherwise it would seem a waste of such nice bits.
Still waiting on mine too.
The rubber doesn't expand - effectively by moulding it, you just squeeze less of it from where your actually holding. I definitely think somewhere. Along the line the amount of rubber has been reduced (wether by design or not)
I though that about the black, but don't remember getting an email about it - I'm sure I'd of switched if I had!
I don't know if the rubber is user swappable/replaceable - I would think it might be.
I've fired them off an email, so we'll see what customer service/feedback is.
Seen the RRP of 25-40. Not sure if it's have a go money for grips really. Going to be hard to see if the concept works for you as they are so individual (1 off moulding?) I tend to move my hands round a bit especially on longer rides. Be interesting to see what people think in 2-3 months
I got the premium version for £21 as an early bird backer, not sure I'd pay the full whack.
The rubber is remouldable - based on a polymorph type plastic/rubber?
Yep, easy to mould/remould - I had a couple of goes to see what different grips worked like - ended up mounting them on the handlebar to do it, so I got the perfect grip.
Still waiting on mine too.
I also went for the early bird premium version so was hoping to get them this week.
Do they remould everytime you grip them (memory foam style) or are they like mouldable insoles that you only do the once? As I know I move my hands around the grips quite a lot depending on the terrain and grip them fairly loosely at the best of times.
Reheat with boiling water and then reshape to suit.
Great idea but my hands move about all the time that's why I will stick with my chunky monkeys!
Mine arrived today so will have a play later.
Same thoughts as above regarding thickness of grip, the images on the site showed a lot thicker and therefore pronounced moulding than what is possible. Also I think the lock bolts were squashed up against my grips in the packing because I have two bolt sized recesses in the grips which aren't shifting!
Not ridden with mine yet for any further thoughts
simonbea - i think those recesses are to do with the material and it's production, as I have exactly the same - not cosmetically great, and something that should be addressed, but also not something that ultimately bothered me so far.
Haven't posted here much, but thought I'd come in on this. I received mine yesterday and although they look well made, I agree re the amount of grip material. I'm a wee bit concerned that the clamp is only actually attached to the main body by about 5mm of aluminium with a gap the rest of the way round. They are pretty chunky so this is probably not a real problem My other concern is that, as a mountain biker my hands will be in completely different positions when sitting climbing and when standing up heading back down the way. To be honest, I probably wont use them for this reason.
A month on from receiving the grips and here are some impressions....
- doing the hand imprints was pretty easy. I had to re-do one, as I'd put my hand in the wrong place, but it remoulded very easily.
- the material squashes between your fingers and out around them, so even though it seems quite thin when unmoulded, it looks thicker when moulded.
- the rubber feels pretty hard and in use could have more give. I guess they went for harder material for durability, but it would be more comfortable if it was a bit softer.
- I have these fitted to my rigid 29er, and i don't move my hands around too much, as it's more an all day bike. When you do move your hands around you can feel the moulded ridges, and they are definitely more comfortable when leaving your hands in one place. They wouldn't really suit my full-suss as I do move around on the bars a lot more.
- fitting was easy, just one 4mm Allen bolt to do up, and the aluminium part seems sturdy. The plastic end caps snap on with pleasing solidity, and haven't shifted even with a few tree strikes.
Overall - a well made set of grips, more suited to an all day bike/tourer. The compound could be softer, they are comfortable, but only if you are a rider who doesn't move their hands a lot. An interesting concept, but maybe of limited appeal to your average UK rider.
Mine are still sitting on the shelf waiting to do...
