I have a set of these http://www.pinkbike.com/news/odi-troy-lee-grips-review-2011.html

They come disassembled, no biggie.

But it's impossible to get the collars onto the grips, they're basically a tiny bit too small/tight and the flanges can't get into them.

I've done by persuasion with a rubber mallet, but that can't be the right way. They're just grips FFS.

What am I doing wrong?

I always position the collar onto the end of the grip so that its lined up exactly and push it on a little bit so that it stays there. Then holding the grip with the collar underneath, press it down onto a solid surface until the collar pops on. They do go, there's a knack, once you've done a couple it becomes a lot easier

Yeah, same as above, on a flat surface, and push down hard, they click into place. Great grips.

Have you loosened the screws on the collar a bit?

Screws aren't in the collars yet.
