Hi all, new here.
Maybe a stupid question but where can i find a headset that would take a taper 1.5" fork on this frame?
i'm 6.1 (185cm) should i go for a 20" frame and 50mm stem/wide bars combo? or 18" and 80mm stem?

1 Hope Pick n Mix Headsets - Top Cup - 1.1/8" - Integral 43.95mm

for mine.

I was going to go for a smoothie but an extra £20 for a crown race is stupid. Think I'll get a Hope. Cheers for the info wwaswas.

Here's my large Evo, it's got all the old bits from my Inbred except the fork and headset. I ordered a Superstar headset but sent it back when I saw it. The bearings rattled around in the cups! For not much more I have a Hope which will last. It handles well at 140mm, and is the only 29er I've managed to wheelie.

I'm going to eventually upgrade the wheels (singlespeed rear) to Chinese carbon rims, swap the 2x7 for 1x10.... and a KS Lev if I can.

Hi Happybiker - nice build!

I have bought a set of 29er Rebas & 29er wheels as well as some 10 speed XT transmission stuff & was waiting for a 19" Dirty Harry 29er raw carbon frame to come back into stock......but I am very tempted by the fireline Ti. Particularly the LTD as I am OK at fettling.

The Hope headset looks the business & the rear wheel clearance not too bad.

You say yours is a large (20") & how tall are you / what is your inside leg? I am just ovet 6ft (32" i/Leg) & am leaning towards the 20" too.

Hi Johnhighfield, Im 6ft with a 32/33 inside leg and the 20" is great. I come from an xc racing background and wanted mine to be capable of all day marathon races as well as fun trail centre weekends. I would say if you are more into descending the 18 is probably better, although I can't see mine being a slow descender, the top tubes are pretty short anyway. I still haven't taken it on a proper ride but just did an hour locally through muddy fields and then some playing on the local skate park and it's awesome!

My Inbred was the opposite, it never inspired me to go and play on it, although the extra 40mm of travel might be the reason. I'm running an 80mm stem 680mm bar combo, I have a 60/720mm on my full sus which I might put on just to see.

Hey, i'm 6"1 and currently ride an 18" ragley mmmbop which is just about the right size ( with a layback seat post). Would I need a 20" frame or can I get away with an 18"? I still want to run a 50/60mm stem.

Hmm, 20" out of stock.
wondering if 18" would be better for me anyway to retain maneuverability from the wagon wheels and a lively playfull handling.
Any thoughts out there?

The easiest to manoeuvre bike will be the one that fits you best?

I saw on a few forums the "ride a size down on a 29er" recommendations. Never been on a 29er so how valid is that? the majority of my riding would be on tight technical singletracks with more importance on the descents than the climbs so i imagine a shorter wheelbase might be the better option? i intend to fit a RS Revelation 130mm fork btw.

Just ride a bike that fits.

No point riding the wrong size just to make if feel like a bike with smaller wheels

Bikes are always easier to ride when your knees hit the handlebars when you stand up and you sit so far over the back wheel you pull a wheelie when you sit down.

6' here on an 18". My Ragley is the same size ... they feel like very similar sizes and angles. Wheelbase is smaller on the Titus tho!

There's some truth in that but, as with everything, it varies from bike to bike. I ride a 20" 456 and a 19" Rumblefish, which both fit me well, and I've got a 20" Fireline. Try before you buy if poss (but I didn't on any of mine).

Following this with great interest.

Come on all you builders!! I like the idea of this bike but the execution seems to have been a quality control nightmare for the On One boys. I can happily overlook the bits that we know are not quite right if the ride is good.

So come all you tinkerers, get 'em built, give 'em a thrash and let us know how they go.

Hi - I have been tempted by the posts (and the set of 29er wheels & Reba Forks I bought in the Jan Sales) and pulled the trigger on a 20" Ltd version. Just waiting for my box now.....

I would appreciate some help with the headset. I like your build happybiker & fancy a Hope headset too. I read your info wwaswas which is helpful.

I have a set of standard forks 1.1/8" not tapered so this is the question for a Hope pick-&-mix set up:

Top = 1.1/8" Integral 43.95mm - is this correct?

Bottom = 1.5" - 1.1/8" step down (part no 26985 from CRC) - is this correct?

Do I need any converter for the fork crown or does all the bits come with the bottom bearing kit?

Many thanks - John

johnhighfield - should all be in with the bottom bits. Make sure you get the newer deisgn that uses the crown race for the step down bit not the cup that the previous version did it means you can fit a taper fork in future with just a new crown race.

My 20" was an ounce under 4lbs IIRC.

Someone asked about ride impressions. Its a bike. I'll admit I'm not a seasoned 29" owner, but it handles much like folk tell me they do. You have to muscle it into corners or it runs wide. Its not as flickable as either my 456 or my BluePig. It is a heck of a lot faster though. It isn't as stable at speed in rough stuff for whatever reason, wheels are more flexible, as are the forks (though same fork and rims on 26 and 29, just larger on 29), but it does kinda feel like the bike is starting to get its knickers in a twist when you hit a rock garden. It does find its own line and not beat you up though, its just different. Not good nor bad I guess.

I wouldn't mind slightly longer stays myself (and not just cos I've had the back wheel nearly lock up with shit between it and the seat tube), perhaps just personal taste. Its a little to easy to wheelie when climbing (and I refuse to flip the stem over).

For £500 you can't complain really. For £700 I'd still not TBH. Its nice.

Mine arrived yesterday too - & it looks pretty cool!

I measured it to be sure (yes a 20") and it weighs in at 3.68lbs. I weighed it several times and give or take a bit - thats what it comes in at. I checked the frame size against my large Titus FTM carbon & it comes up about the same in top tube & seat tube - although the rear stays are angled up more for the bigger rear wheel so the stand over height may be a bit different.

I've got some bits already bought (hope/crest) wheels; XT 10 speed transmission; & Reba forks & spent some time last night chasing the best prices between CRC; Winstanleys; Merlins & Bike Discount - for a range of other bits.

I'm going for black hope BB; headset & seat clamp & hopefully a carbon finishing set - which I may have to steal off one of my other bikes... I have front hope mono M4 & rear mono brake (black & gold ones) that I think I can pull together from my build box.

My Titus badge didn't come in the box so I will have to chase this up with One-One. I have seen a metal one they also seem to do but haven't seen this listed anywhere bit it looks much better.

I am hopefull of having a building session in the next week or two - the question is - Is there any need to helicopter tape a Ti frame??

I didn't bother on my Ti 456 and haven't had an issue so I'm not planning on putting any on this.

Here's mine:

[IMG] [/IMG]

Bit of a Frankenbike at the moment until I'm able to build the wheels (A/Cs on Flows) and decide what combination of bars/stem/steerer height is going to work.. singlespeed out of curiosity (and it makes a nice 'clean' build) but will probably switch to 1x10 once I have the bits.

Maybe that's the solution: 29" front wheel and 650b at the back with a burly 2.4 tyre.
Is that rear disc a 160?

Yes, it is.

The rear tyre is a 2.25 On One Smorgasbord and the clearance is about 7mm. I guess using a wider rim would give you a little bit extra..

Other designs exist with way under 17" chainstays and good tyre clearance (Kona Honzo, Canfield N9 and YS, 2SoulsCycles)?

This is what I've been thinking. I have a spare Hope hub so may give it a go. Otherwise I'm still not clear which tyre I'll use on the rear with 2x10 for a foreign holiday in April.

Finally got mine built up. Hopefully give it a proper ride this weekend. Initial impression riding it up and down the street is it feels more laid back than other 29ers I've ridden. Steering is nice and stable until you go towards 90deg when the slack angle 'whips' the bars round more rapidly. Very early days though. I've built it up 3x9 - I'll try and weigh it and get a pic up soon...

Ride review:

20 inch frame, built up single speed, revelation rct3 forks, Kore durox 2 wheel set, reverb dropper post. Ridden around Local woods with good mix of tight twisty single track and faster stuff with a few jumps and 1st proper ride. Around Cwmcarn last weekend. Previous 2 bikes were a Giant Anthem X whose frame broke and a 2009 stumpjumper pro fsr. 1st ride up and down the road on the Titus I couldn't believe how nice it was to ride, really easy to lift the front end and get it in the air, easiest bike I've had to bunny hop and a foot of height could be achieved without really trying (I ride flat pedals). In the local woods I couldn't believe how stable the bike is and how it carries speed through the rooty muddy trails, loads of extra grip and even though it's tight and twisty I found it easier to ride than the 26 inch bikes I'd had before. The speeds were relatively slow though and very muddy so no chance to see how the titanium would dampen the bumps. I planned a trip to Cwmcarn to help me decide whether to sell the stumpjumper! I rode the usual trail and then went back up again and rode the downhill course. The bike absolutely fly's! In places were I'd be usually braking on my 26 fs bike I was just letting it roll, it was faster Than my stumpjumper! The bike loves getting air was superb and composed off drops and over tabletops, a really stable and confidence inspiring ride. The downhill course was despatched with ease with the bike again showing how hugely capable it is downhill. The combo of bigger wheels and the titanium really smooth the ride out and although the terrain is rocky I never missed the rear suspension - in fact I'd almost go as far as saying it feels like you have got rear suspension! The only thing I did notice is that I could feel the difference from 26 wheels when riding the the short but very tight and twisty red single track at the top of Cwmcarn, not quite as flick able and you had to muscle it through in places, a different sensation but still enjoyable and although more work I'm not sure it was any slower through this section because of the extra grip - just more work. I'm now completely obsessed with this bike and can't believe how much fun it is to ride - the stumpjumper is getting sold as I can't think of anywhere I'd choose to ride it over this!

Well peed off at present as I now have most bits to start the build except some key components - Hope BB & Hope headset! Made the mistake of ordering them from Bike Discount (York) as they were cheaper than CRC. That was 11 days ago & still no sign of them.....I'm now chasing them up!

Googling them & posting up here the reviews look very very mixed So I've got my 1/2 holiday & have been looking forward to getting on with the build & the most I can do is to put my tyres on the wheels.....Grrr

I finished my build and took it for a little spin yesterday - impressed so far. My spec is 20" frame, 2x10 SLX groupset, revelations, Arch rims on Hope hubs, 2.3 purgatory on the front, 2.1 ground control on the back, low rise monkeylite bars & 80mm stem.

Went up to Cannock Chase for a lap of FTD yesterday morning and the initial impression was that it felt very familiar. My previous hardtail was a ti456 & I've also got a Trek Rumblefish, this feels like its somewhere between the two - almost taking the best bits of both. Having ridden a 29er for a year but still loving my 456 I'd hoped that the Fireline would be just like the 456 with the benefits of a 29er & that's exactly what it is. Obviously I can't read too much into a short ride but first impressions are very promising.

Right, I think I want one - does anyone have a large I can chuck a leg over? I've rang on-one but they've not got any built up to try.

Mine is a large & I'm in North Herts - if thats any good. I am hoping to have it built up by this weekend as have had problems with getting parts I ordered in a timely fashion...
