Planning on taking a couple of inches off front and rear hoses!
A few questions
1. Best @ lever end or caliper end ?
2.Do I need to take the pads out or is ok just to leave them in unwedged
3. Is it vital to use new olives?
Will have to feed them through frame bosses not clipped on!
Any tips for my morning fettle they are Hope m4 techs

Ta Rich

Best done at lever end,
Pads can stay in, if you work at lever end you don't even need to remove caliper.
Can reuse olives, before you cut, push the olive up the hose beyond the cut point - saves trying to thread an olive back over the cut end.

There's probably a video guide on the Hopetech website....

EDIT - http://www.hopetech.com/page.aspx?itemID=SPG219 video guides 🙂

1.I'd take from the lever end - easier to get/keep air out.

2.If lever end leave pads in.

3. Use new olives - not worth risking a crimped/dented one and having to do it all over again.
(bitd goodridge hoses used to have reusable hardware(?))

- feed through bosses - no thank you - a couple of skinny zip ties for me - I'm not proud 😉

🙁 At least riding slower it won't matter so much if your brake hose 'pops off'.

<Cheer up news> I bought an old Marin off you for a buddy to take up MTB years ago ( yellow rims hope XC4). Said buddy has stuck with cycling and is coming up this weekend to show off his new C456 - thanks Rich.

Just out of interest, how did you manage to keep the air out? I always have to re-bleed the brakes after shortening the hoses. (I do it from the lever end as well) Am I doing something wrong?

Saying that, bleeding hopes only takes 5 minutes and dot 5.1 is dirt cheap if you have a Halfords trade card 😀

Strip the plastic outer coating back to where you're going to trim the hose to.
Then open up the olive and slide it down the hose into the correct position. THEN cut the spare hose that's sticking out the end.
That way you don't have to struggle trying to get the olive back over the slightly fraying braiding.

In that case you're ******. 😆
You can still remove the olive to thread the hose through to bosses and get it back on the hose before shortening as above.
It'll be easier to get the olive back onto the hose where it's already been sat as the hose braiding will have been squashed down where it's been bolted up.

Rich - if they're 'macaroni tube' guides - I just 'platex cross your heart' them to the bottom with two skinny zip ties - they tuck up quite neatly and none of the other kids have taken the mick yet. 🙂

[ your old marin got loads of use before being passed on to a very happy retro guy, I believe his daughter uses it now - so good karma ]
