the time has come to replace my 5010 cc circa 12.5kg, not through choice unfortunately.

I'm looking for a fun bike to replace my 5010.
circa <13KG, shimano XT 12s, ready built or frame only to build.
27.5 or 29er preferred, 11-46 upto 51t

trying to generate some ideas, looking for a fun FS bike that climbs well and is poppy and fun to ride like the 5010 that can handle pmba/ard enduros. max suspension 135 rear, 140-150 upfront.
riding is mixed, trail centre, moorland, local woods, peaks/west yorkshire.

options considered so far: 5010 / tallboy / RC295 / trek /ibis ripley.
can you add any more to the list?

sorry its been done a million times.

Ripley with a 140mm fork isn't a bad shout. Mine is definitely more 'trail' than 'enduro' if those definitions mean anything. I'd happily ride in 95% of the places I'd ride my RipMo. Although the RipMo feels considerably more capable in that last 5%

It is the best climbing FS I've ridden as I've said on here before. It's definitely 'poppy', not stupidly stiff and can be built light without going mad on super expensive components.

Having said all that I did look hard at the 140mm Orbea Occam as well.

I was looking at a canyon neuron. Seems to fit the bill, but don’t know how it rides.

I'm enjoying my bird aether. A bit chubby so not sure it would hit your weight requirements but fun everywhere. New mojo maybe?

Same kind of thing as Ian PV - I like my Bird Aether 7 - but you’d struggle to build it down to that weight I reckon.

Maybe with a lightweight Carbon wheelset and XX1 / Carbon finishing components you’d get it down to 30lbs perhaps.

It’s definitely built to last though and nice to chuck around / has sensible angles that are slack enough for some steep / fast rocky stuff. You can run a 140 or 150mm fork and it’s got 130mm rear travel. Pedals pretty well.

You probably need carbon to get proper light - I like the look of the new Scout but Transition don’t come up light usually as they’re built robustly.

Generally enduro strong doesn’t also match the lightweight requirement, but I guess it depends how far DT you’re going down that enduro stuff.

thanks for all the comments, yep i think carbon will be the default option.
i had intended to keep my 5010 for fun duties and then decide on a 29er to supplement it, something like a tallboy that can be built light with skinner tyres but could handle an ardrocks when wearing proper tyres. the SC colours and prices put me off at present.

Unfortunately my 5010 was my dream build with fox factory etc
is written off and awaiting an insurance pay out.

i'll be looking to demo them

If going Santa Cruz 29er, would a Hightower fit the remit better than a Tallboy?

@hopkinsgm yeah i think i need to pedal one uphill and see, i demo'd a bronson last year and wasnt blown away by the bigger travel, it definately numbed the trail at glentress black/red.

I'm more inclined to take SC marketing words "Want to race XC whippets on the climbs but still charge the downs? Try the Tallboy." at facevalue :0)

Any more word on what looks like a carbon 29" Aether from Bird? That might fit your needs

Think the Carbon Aether 9c is meant to be available for pre-order July/August with delivery Sep/Oct or something like that at the last update. Not a clue on weight or gravel yet.

It sounds like you don’t want a bike that’ll be too enduro or it will
numb easier trails. Could you look at another 5010? The Bronson isn’t hugely enduro and if you found that a bit dull then you need to air on the shorter travel end of trail bikes I reckon.

Maybe you need a ‘down-country’ bike to quite a niche. Lighter weight but with decent modern angles. Transition Spur as an example.....

I was going to mention the Bird too, how about a Norco Optic?

You didn't specify a budget but I would be looking at the new Orange Stage evo

Definitely worth a look, if only to make the Carbon Hightower S kit look good value at £300 less

Orbea Occam? I have an Orbea Rallon R5 which rides exactly as you describe you are looking for, but it does have more travel, so maybe look at the Occam if the travel number is really important ?

Theres a great review of it on this site.

Yeti SB130? Or if you wanted something a touch beefier, SB140 or Pivot Switchblade.

Intense Primer? There doesn't seem to be much love for these on here, don't know why. I love mine.

I'm in the same situation, and a Spitfire V3 is top of the list right now.

That said, my 29er curiosity could get the better of me..

sounds to me like another 5010 is the right bike for you. Unless you just fancy a change?

@johnhe yes the new 5010 is definately an option, i had planned to go 29er this summer and keep the 5010 for life, but with covid it never happened. now i'm in need of a full sus. the 5010 would be the easy choice, but damn expensive 's' XT' £6k versus £4.1k on pace r295.

new colour tallboy in ebony could be the one. :0)

the banshee spitfire looks a beauty, yeti and occam look ideal too,
i like the intense but the colours arent for me.
once i'm back riding i'm hoping demos will be a possibility.

never had a penchant for an orange, although i see tonnes locally, under 10 miles from factory, norco mike ashley is a No

Nice. But how did you write off a 5010?
