My XC8s have bitten the dust just outside warranty. A spring retention pin on both left and right pedals has come adrift. I now realise that this is a widely reported failure.
I really like the feel of the Times, and I really liked the reliability of SPD back when I used them. A combination of the two would be perfect.
The Hope Union RC pedals have the same vital statistics as the Times in terms of free float and disengagement angle. They have bit less stack height but I assume that just means lowering my saddle a few mm. I would also think that the Hope's will be far more reliable and repairable.
I appreciate that they're just out, but does anyone have any real world experience of the Hopes? Is it fair to assume that they will have a broadly similar feel to the Time Atacs?
Cheers!
I'd just buy the cheapest ATAC pedals. Hardly any difference between them.
That is an option, but I'm feeling a bit stung by Time. My XC8s will have had <100 rides in them.
Also, binning pedals that frequently does seem wasteful.
Minor qualms, just exploring the options.
I've had a set of time pedals over 20 years and I still use them on a bike.
Yes I think the late 90s, early 00s were Time's heyday. There has been a bit of value engineering to the product since then.
Modern Time pedals are less hard wearing and not repairable IME.
Currently riding look spd compatibles. Cartridge bearings ftw
Another pedal option is the HT M1
I just bought some Julien Absalon signature Time XC pedals on eBay for CX duties, they seem to deal with mud better than anything else.
Am hoping I can dribble some red Loctite or similar in and around the heads of those pins, having to try and bash on back into place in a cloud of midgies on the banks of Loch Affric is an experience I never want to repeat!

Suspect the design has changed, I've had 2 sets in 4 years, maybe 5000km between them.
Ive been running the new Hope pedals but with the large cage and really happy with the engagement. Tried various pedals and so far really happy with these. May not be applicable to the smaller cage but in typical hope fashion the larger cage comes with info on the height the cleat should be set at so that your shoes fit nicely between the cage and mechanism, which i havent seen on any other pedal.
I bought a pair of Hope RC and initial impressions very good.
There's a rock solid connection between cleat and pedal (no rattle or unwanted play), and a meaningful range of spring force. Engage and disengagement feel smooth but positive. The float does not not feel entirely free, it does seem to lightly self centre. That's on the tighter 4° cleats.
I'd be keen to try the supplied 5° cleats. Very very minor fly in the ointment is that they only supply one set of bolts and cleat bolt plates, which is annoying if you have two pairs of shoes.
