Does anyone know of a way to regrease the bearings or axle on these?

I've got a click on left pedal which you can hear by hand rotating it, not heard it whilst biking luckily, but it's only a matter of time i guess

There's no play in the pedal at all more likely just lack of grease so would like to repack and clean

There doesn't seem any obvious way to do this when I've just looked, there's nothing to unscrew anywhere and the end cap isnt something that looks like it comes off?

If you Google "time pedal service", several threads on here come up, as well as lots of other things, obvs.

First thread is here:

Hey fadda thanks

I have searched old threads but I've a feeling the newer time pedals are slightly different

I can't see a way into getting the pedals apart full stop

The end cap on each pedal doesn't look like it will come out, there's no slot for a screwdriver etc

They may have changed the end caps-but mine have all been plastic with lots of round holes round the edge that you can insert circlip pliers or some other pin tool (easy to make 2 nails through bit of wood) .

Gravesendgrunt

Yes thats exactly what mine are on the end caps little dots

So a circlip undoes that and exposes a nut of some form im assuming?

Ah, mine are quite old, and have two holes, but also a 6mm hex key (I just had to go out to the garage and have a look!)

Yep that's all you will find inside-a small 10 mm nut or similar-undo it tap shaft out from nut end, don't loose little bearing, clean grease and re assemble.

What size circlip pliers does it use or are they all just generic?

See above - you'd or ably be able to fashion something that would do the job using two small nails in a bit of wood - they just need to be the right distance apart to stick into the holes (once you've got it not quite right, and bent them to the right spacing usually!)

May as well just get a tool as I love time pedals so will be used a lot in the future

Park tools do one but it comes in 3 different sizes?

Should all fit, the key thing is that the pointy bits on the end of the pliers (they must have a proper name?) have to be able to fit into the holes in the pedal end cap...

Pretty much any circlip pliers will do the job but you could bodge it with all sorts of things as it's only plastic so doesn't need much force to undo/or tighten.

When you put it back together don't get freaked out by the movement - the plastic cap loads the bearings. Before you put that back there will be a few mm of sideways movement on the axle. I took a pedal apart about 3 times and spent ages searching for a part I was sure I'd dropped before I put the plastic cap back and realised it was all fine....

OK that's great thansk folks I'll get and order some circlip pliers for the job and a 10mm socket for the nut

There's actually a pretty easy video on YouTube of some different style ones to mine but same circlip opening so assume will be the same inside

Thanks again 👍🏻

Struggling to find any circlips other than the park tools one which is 20 quid

Can anyone point in direction of a cheap alternative please?

Hi Mate,

Pop down to Halfords. They should have some in and a 10mm socket

https://www.screwfix.com/p/circlip-pliers-set-5-pieces/1988v

are pretty shit for any tight circlips but will do the job on the pedals.

I think my "better" ones are pound shop jobs https://www.ebay.co.uk/p/1759424237?var=512735696802&iid=323745470595

But you really could bodge something to safely remove and tighten the clip on MX pedals with a bit of coat hanger.

Nice one Carl if I get chance to get out ill pop over halfords and have a look, video does look very easy indeed, there's no play in them so assume it's just likely needing a clean and regrease throughout

Happy days, sounds like a bit of grease will sort it.
Maybe check stock in store before driving anywhere

A homemade tools from a wire coat hanger would also do the job. I’ve serviced loads of Time pedals in the past, but usually I have replaced the bearing, not just regreased them.

What are you guys doing to them? I've ridden Time pedals for c20 years (Katies' hack bike still has a set of original times welded to the cranks from that time) and I've never replaced a bearing in them. I've written them off by bending the springs (which are no longer replaceable) and axles (which is why I've stripped them down)
