Hi I have a bike with tiagra 4700 10 speed on It has flat bar 4700 road shifters and I want to change to drop bar I know the 4700 has an 11 speed cable pull but does it mean i can use 11 speed road stis or do I need to use 4700. I'd prefer the 11 speed shifters as I could upgrade as and when plus it give more used options. Thanks
4700 shifters have the same cable pull ratio, but not necessarily the same actual cable pull. You can use your 4700 mechs with 11 speed shimano road shifters but you'd also need to put an 11 speed cassette and chain on at the same time. (the cog spacing on the cassette is narrower on 11 speed and the chain is accordingly slightly thinner on the outer plates, but same inner width, so OK to use existing chainrings). You can't just use your 11 speed shifters and 'miss a cog' on the 10 speed cassette.
As cp says, the shift ratio is the same (1.4) but the amount of cable pull is different - 2.8mm for 4700, 2.7mm for 11spd so won't work perfectly.
Cheers it's a very odd groupset I think, I'm not even sure I could use an 11 speed cassette on these wheels best I keep a look out for 4700 sti units then for sale of ease thanks
Quite possibly not, I went to Tiagra 10S to avoid the need for an 11s compatible hub.
I'm going to replace my Tiagra parts with 10spd GRX when necessary.
Firestarter - sent you a pm re shifters
Iirc, the 11-speed road 11-34 cassettes fit on 10-speed freehubs.
