SO as simple as that, currently looking at 26 and 29 frames and want something stiff. Does the thru axle/maxle type thin fit any frame? Do I need adapters or some sort of bracket? Whats the deal?

Front - requires a compatible fork/hub combo though 9mm "bolt thru" will work with a standard QR fork with appropriate hub/adapter
Rear - 10mm "bolt thru" will work on standard drop out with appropriate hub/adapter, other combos require specific dropout/hub/axle combinations.

The frame also makes a difference, you will find some QR frames are stiffer than through axle models.But generally they are stiffer.
All my mtb's currently have a rear bolt on hub and are standard qr compatable, Hope SS hub etc.
