[Closed] Thoughts on swapping Peace 9r for a Buzzard (or such)?

Hi all.

I’m a recreational mountainbiker diagnosed with a light case of upgradeitis.

I currently ride a 2008 GT Peace 9r that has seen some slight modifications over the last couple of years. (Hope X2 brakes, lighter wheels, burlier tyres, XT cranks, shorter stem, wider bars, bouncy fork)

All in all it rides OK but I have an urge to try something new. FS would be nice but I really can’t justify the cost considering my level of riding.

I do like the look of more modern steel hardtails and I can raise my fork to 120 mm.

To cut it short, what do you think, would swapping to something like a Singular Buzzard or Transition TransAm 29 make for a decent upgrade and make a discernable difference?

I realize there is no right or wrong answer to this but any input is much appreciated.

Cheers
/Johan

Surprised that none of the Singular fans have jumped on this. The Buzzard seems to be well liked by those who have ridden them. I haven't, but it's on the list to try one day.

Conversely I think your GT looks ace!!
If you can afford another bike then go for it but personally I have 3 bikes but could essentially own one and wear it in many different guises...lots to be said for that!

Thanks for your input guys.
The Peace really does what I need but "playful" isn't the word that comes to mind 🙂 (long chainstays)

Maybe someone has gone from Swift (a bit more similar to my Peace) to Buzzard?

Yes I think you would notice the difference - Buzzard (a friend has, cheezpleez on here if you want to track him down) and Yelli Screamy (I have) have fun 29er HT geometry nailed IMO, the short chainstays in particular make a difference. They come alive as soon as they're pointed even moderately down hill. They're also easy and forgiving to ride, the short CS means it turns fast and the slight slackness helps it push on. The marketing pushes the hardcore angle but they can go anywhere, they're fun even without pushing the boundaries.

Try one of either if you can.

I had a Swift, it's a versatile all rounder but I found it a bit dull. Would be a brilliant bike for say LEJOG, but not messing about in the woods. That said I see a lot of racers on them going very fast, and of course the EBB makes SS a doddle.

Johan - Hans Dampfs are heavy old tyres for 29er woodlands riding, if those pics are representative of what you ride then I think you're packing a lot more tyre than you need and maybe you'd notice a benefit from something lighter. (I run Nics in the Surrey Hills). Nice looking bike though. And really you don't need a boinger if that's your natural habitat - you'd probably hate it.

Very interesting thoughts matt (both on bikes and tyres). Thanks for sharing. Much appreciated.

Your son's a better rider than me and better looking than you.

Your riding is like mine except no rocks where I live.

I have a swift and buzzard,

Buzzard is the fun bike for big hills and the swift is the fast, efficient XC machine.

You'll have fun on a buzzard

Update: Just pulled the trigger. One size L Buzzard is coming my way 🙂

Now I need to figure out how to raise my fork to 120 and find the perfect 1x6 gearing 🙂

I'm 5.11 and usually ride a M frame, but I'm thinking I should get a L Buzzard. Modig - how tall are you?

I'm 187 cm (just over 6 ft 1 in). This means I'm close to the upper limit for L according to Singular's sizing guide.

Although top tube seems short for an L, reach is very close to what I have currently. I have long legs and short torso so I tend to like "short for my length" bikes 🙂 (my Peace is M and my biggest problem is I can't get the saddle high enough for proper pedalling. A bit tedious on the transports but once on the trail I do almost all my riding standing up so it's not a biggie).

Carloz I've ridden a medium Buzzard (I'm 172cm) and I reckon you're right on an L. Also the ETT comes up a bit shorter than my Yelli Screamy, they're not a long bike.

Get a short stem, 60mm ish.

Cheers guys - on paper the geometry of the L is spot on for me. Looking forwards to seeing how it translates into a finished bike.

As Matt says above, I have a Buzzard and I'm a big fan. It really is playful - and not just for a 29er.

The top tube is short but I've quickly got used to it and it contributes to the playful character. I'm 5ft 9in on a medium with a 50mm stem. It's short but fun. Not done any all day rides on it yet but I reckon it would be fine.

After what seemed like an endless wait for a headset I finally got started yesterday. Pretty much put it together but still waiting for a XCX chain device to arrive (1x6 gearing on ProII SS/Trials).

Only just tried it around the parking lot but already set a new personal best wheeling 🙂

Wheight=13.2 kg as is

Crappy phone pics for now:

Can't wait to get it dirty

It's an old 26.8 mm RaceFace XY (given to me by a friend to fit the GT above) http://www.retrobike.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=190592

Fitted with a shim to the Buzzard until I get somethin proper.

Now also lab approved.
Brought a slightly better camera when "walking" the dog.
