Looking to replace my current cranks and was wondering if they work whip with 9sp. Thought I could, at a push, whip the chain rings off and replace them but was not sure if the spacing of the crank would allowing it.
Any thoughts, any experience?
BTW these one (probably in silver though):
yes
the rings will work fine with 9 speed. Stick with the 9 speed chain. But you will need a new front deraillieur for those rings I think due to the cage and cage path needing to be designed for them. Existing shifter will be fine though.
the ring position will be deigned for 2 rings and you can't fit an outer chainring. Will be a nice 2x9 set up though.
on a 10 speed crank the chainrings are closer together, but the 9speed chain will work on it no problems.
but, changing my 9 speed triple to a 10 speed triple caused enough problems on my setup that im taking off the big ring as i couldnt get the chain to stay on there on the downhills 🙁 ; the derailluer wasnt in the right place to keep the chain on it. i liked having a big ring so im still not sure how 2x9 will work out.
that was on a tripple though so it may be ok on a double crank.
im tired, so if that makes no sense let me know and ill try to explain it again 🙂
Float - I'm using 10 speed rings with 9 speed XT cranks and a 9 speed front derailleir and not had any problems with the chain dropping. I had to keep the deraillieur height the same as it was with the 9 speed 44T as if I dropped it down for the 42T it caught on the 32T middle ring as the cage and articulation on the 9 speed one are wrong for the 24-32-42 rings.
As for the spacing difference I am not sure if there is any difference. Both the 9 speed and 10 speed appear to be the same crank arms with just different rings.
thats the thing though, youre still using the 9 speed cranks, just with different rings, so the spacing between them is the same. on a proper 10 speed crank the rings are closer together.
OP sounds to me as if hes planning on using a 10 speed crank.
I'm not sure if the gap is less though as the arms seem to be the same. it might be that they have changed the rings slightly. The cassette spacing is closer obviously.
i would have expected a new part number for the 10 speed cranks if there was a difference.
I've just put a 10sp XTR double on my new wagon with 9 speed mechs, shifters and chain.

Yes, I was theorising whether the ring spacing was slimmer on the cranks as per the cassette so thanks for the info.
Also, just realised how bad my spelling is at night. 😯

Okay that's definitely food for thought. Just let me know if you do.

I'll see what I can do!
I can't remember if 9 speed chains are wider overall or whether it's the inner dimension. Either way no probs with 50 miles of riding so far.
9 speed chains are wider overall. I know this as I used a 9 speed quick-link on a 10 speed chain in an emergency, and it was a little loose.
I also didn't die.
Do the doubles use the same BB as the triple chainsets?
If HTII then I'd say yes.
Are XT rings still made of wensleydalechainsucktanium, or have they improved from the mid 2000s?
