Really ! When did limit screws, cable tension and indexing all change...

New winter road bike that I got a few weeks back from LBS needed a few tweaks after 100 or so miles. Within 10 minutes in the stand I had pretty much jammed up the front shifting entirely !

I am pretty used to fitting and setting up gears so had to resort to the Shimano manual, which was a piece of education indeed !

Oh well, now I know, and my other bikes are all single ring anyway these days 😁

I just got a new Ultegra and they’ve made it dead easy! Line up the orange tooth sticker, tighten the cable, shift into big ring, one down click and line up the guide lines. Has worked perfectly since. Bit weird how the cable tucks round and through the little hole, but never has a front mech been this simple to fit.

I think this one would have been same to fit, but I made the error of tweaking it the same way as I would with previous versions, however the whole setup is new now.

I've been through the exact same thing last week, had to resort to reading the online PDF. Now I know, it's really easy.

Its definitely a mech I resorted to watching a Youtube video to understand for the first time in my life.

Ha, yeah, I made the mistake of trying to tweak my GRX front mech out on the trail, result: granny ring all the way home!

Same with my GRX mech. A bit daunting when I first read the instructions but once set up it’s flawless

My ultegra one was all well and good until I attempted to fit a new cable and then couldn't remove the little 2mm tension grub screw as it's rounded off. Need to try and attempt to get the little bar steward out now. I've fixed the mech into the big ring and am manning up for the time being.

Yes it's all new, I recently got R8000 and was very confused, for 5 minutes. Then I read the instructions and it's all very simple.

You did read the instructions, didn't you?

^^^^ err 🙂

It came all setup on a new bike, you don't need to read the instructions to be ready to do a roadside tweak, do you ....

Hmm !

Mine was also on a new bike, fortunately they chucked the instructions in. I am glad I waited til I got home before messing with it though 🙂

Yep, very confusing - also 2mm allen keys - PITA most multi-tools don't have that small......

I found this vid very useful (bit long but good otherwise)..

Bump.

Another ride today dominated by my inability to find the sweetspot on my front 105.

How have Shimano taken such a simple design and made it so finickity?

It seems that the high adjust ALSO adjusts the low position, so finding a good high limit position to remove chain rub and encourage snappy shifts just means it rattles like hell in the granny ring and biggest two or three sprockets 🙄

I also use the trim shift quite a lot but my 105 mech and older GRX mech just seemed to 'lose' the ability to perform any trim after a while, maybe grubby cables or a grubby mech but in the past it was never an issue.

Do SRAM Yaw derailleurs work with Shimano shifters? Would an old school shimano front mech work with the new shifters?

Never used to struggle with front mechs, I'll be going 1x at this rate...

The new Shimano rear mechs require considerably more cable tension which can be a right PITA with a new build with internal cabling etc in order to get the trim to work - lots of new bikes don’t come set-up correctly. It’s also worth noting that the stop screws work in reverse from regular mechs i.e. unscrew to move it out. Read the manual as it’s a bit counter intuitive at first.

Yeah have worked through the manual a few times, honestly thought I understood it!

Did some more googling, lots of forums and threads with people experiencing the same issues.

Have found some cheap, old school Ultegra 6800 mechs, I'm just going to fit them instead, I don't need the additional clearance that the new FDs are apparently designed to accomodate...

They aren't actually stop screws, are they, in the same way as before?

Needing more cable tension seems familiar - the routing isn't perfect on mine and it makes it slightly sub optimal. I'm a fan overall though, nice design.

I didn't have any issues when following the exact procedure in the instructions, despite there being a lot of friction caused by the cable exit hole in the frame being in the wrong spot.

Hmm... I will try to set up again with a new cable and try the additional cable pull.

My old school solution probably wouldn't work on my GRX equipped gravel bike anyway as old school mechs can't stretch to the wider GRX chainline.
