Hello hive mind! Some advice if I may...
I've recently moved out of Bristol to Thornbury and am looking for advice on new local places to ride. A young family means spending ages in a car to go riding makes it a no go so I'm keen to stay as local as possible for regular riding.
I know Ashton Court/Leigh Woods well and I grew up across the other side of the Bridge so know the Wye Valley, Cwmcarn etc so can pop across there with no issues. However, does anyone have any advice about further up the A38/M5? I'm thinking Dursley, North Nibley etc. Better still does anyone have any gpx files for routes? Any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance.
It's Heaven of the South around this time (found it - this weekend). They use trails around Kingswood (Wootton Under Edge), so have a strava search or see if someone can give you a GPX file. THere may be some private land used for the event, so be careful of that.
Theres a bit of cheeeky stuff coming down of north nibley monument, and plenty in the area in general.
Some decent riding between there and wotton and around, strava heatmap will give you a bit of help.
Go explore above Nibley and Dursley. Both areas can be joined up. You wont be disappointed. If ypu see a bit of singletrack, just go with it.
Try Breakheart Quarry with the kids.
I live in dursley so if you ever want to explore just drop me a message, there is a good amount of stuff out here from stinchcombe and nibley then loads to link up towards Stroud. Fod is only 40 minutes up the road too
Excellent, thanks for the advice everyone. It sounds like it's definitely worth a proper explore.
Mark - I may well give you a shout next time I'm headed up there, it'd be good to have someone who knows the trails!
Yeah sure thing, quite often try and get out on a Tuesday night and early mornings on the weekends as it suits to guys with kids better
Alpha1653 & marksnook - ping me a message if you arrange anything as I'll be interested in this. I'm Stroud based & don't get over that way too much.
Next STW group ride Querty 🙂
Im Dursley based and would be up for a group ride. Both Nibley and Dursley have plenty of good singletrack and lots of technical DH tracks. Nibley is worth just getting lost in, following any track you find. Use the monument at one end and road at the other as boundary's and explore anything in between!
Ha! This thing's growing legs - I've already been contacted by a Bristol STWer I know who's up for an explore. Sounds like an intriguing place to have a play, plus it's only 20 minutes away for me. Winner!
Mark & GeForce - given you both live in the same place, know each other?
I'm not from dursley so don' know anyone really! Might have met though
Sounds like we need to sort a bit of a group ride! Saturday/sunday mornings are pretty good for me. Quite like getting out early but whenever suits really!
Funnily enough I rode stinchcombe and Nibley in clueing some fairly rad shit from the monument this week as it’s my mates local loop! Some proper climbsnin there as well mind!
Yeah nibley has some good stuff, there has been quite a bit of work done up there lately, it works pretty well in winter so a lot of the Belmont crew ride there.
I'e been trying to get some work done at the golf course end of stinchcombe but on my own it's pretty much just keeping everything clear
There is also an mtb club in wotton under edge called edge mtb or something. They have a Facebook group. They ride mostly on a Wednesday though and I can make it out Wednesday night's
I think I'm the other Bristol STWer Alpha1653 was referring to! **waves**
I'm East Bristol based but always keen to explore new areas. I'm away with work until next week & early doors suits me on account of young family.
I'll be keeping an eye out for updates!
I'll be bringing up the rear slowly on my ancient 26" wheels and calling for frequent cake stops!!
Cheers, Paul
You might want to try asking the boss of cytek in Stroud.
Next weekend then (26 or 27th)?
Especially worth it if this weather holds.
Hello Paul! 26" wheels and cake stops are the way forward.
I'm well up for a group ride...though I'm out of the country for a few weeks from Friday so knowing my luck by the time I'm free the proper British summer will be back with a vengeance! If you do manage a group ride before I'm back then have a great time.
Either way, it's great knowing there's some really good riding only 20 mins away from home.
We have a little Wednesday evening ride group. This week we will do a Dursley to Nibley and back ride, starting at 6pm from the Old Spot pub in Dursley if anyone would like to join us. 2-2.5 hour ride, nothing too fast or crazy. PM if you would like to be added to WhatsApp group.
Hi GeForce - apologies for the slow response. That's a really kind offer of getting involved with your Wednesday ride but I'm going to hold off for the time being. Unfortunately, week day rides are a challenge for me as I don't get back home until mid evening normally. That said, all that might change for the better at the end of the summer (new job) so I'll keep it in my back pocket.
Happy trails, y'all 😉
I'm kinda interested in the Wed pm ride but need to wriggle out of some domestic chores first....
Go for it, you can make up your excuses in the pub afterwards!
If you don't mind a short drive (or longer ride) there is a huge amount of single track and DH runs/jumps around Cranham and Painswick Beacon. Iv found using Strava heat maps quite good at finding the hidden trails.
What you can do if you like a bit of adventure is take the Cam - Cheltenham train, then ride back via Leckhampton, Cranham, Edge, Randwick, Selsley and Coaley. With a bit of local knowledge you can make it most of the way on fantastic singletrack, with only a few boring sections to link it all up.
I’m in for tomorrow nights ride. GFJ – i’ve messaged you.

Had a fantastic ride with a great group of riders on dry dusty trails. I really should make the effort to get over that way more often. Many thanks to Chris for showing me round.
