...but something was happening and they were not letting traffic in. I had a trailer on the back and I needed to empty it before picking up some turf. I had the option of sitting there interminably or nipping onto the industrial estate and calling in at LBS. So I did that. They have a sale on. This afternoon I went back with my credit card and wife's blessing.

So I blame the council. If they had sorted their tip out, I wouldn't have had to spend in excess of £2k.

But, it's a nice carbon fibre Cannondale. Reduced from £3.5K, so I reckon I got a bargain.

Anyone else bought bikes almost by accident?

I did a drunken eBay bid on a Ducati 1098s and won  it. That took some explaining.

Yeah - colleague went to LBS to pick

up his new Tarmac and I wandered along out of curiosity, it having been over two decades since I’d tried a racing bike. Saw a demo roubaix and within a few days, it was my turn to collect a bike.

Similar to Colp - I bought a grp Folkboat whilst sat in the pub whilst doing one eyed browsing at ebay a few years ago...

Went into the shop for a saddle for my wife.  Emerged with a carbon road bike.  Happily she was there and saw what a bargain it was 🙂

Not a bike but had a friend who went home drunk, 3 days later a Rolf Harris Didgeridoo turned up which he bought from QVC

Went to the tip.

Picked up a pair of lightly used Maxxis HR (original version) from the tyre recycling container for free whilst I was there.

Went to the tip with some soil. Got charged £3.50 per bag. No wonder I'm seeing fly tipping on the increase.
So that's £28 less in the bike fund jar 🙁

I was in Turkey in September; I follow the Intense FB  etc sites, and at midnight one evening I got a “final 2018 offers” post.......woke up with a notification that my new Carbine was on its way.

Got a text from Stif to say my (free) replacement decals were in. Went to pick them up, came out with the stickers, and an order receipt for a custom built SC chameleon.

I still haven't fitted the decals, 3 years later.

Wish I'd known. Could have done with some soil and wouldn't have charged you a penny!

Took my friend's dad's old steel road bike, that he'd given me when my commuter was stolen, to a local shop who dealt with second hand bikes to see if it was worth anything. I'd just bought a Marin on the classifieds and didn't have space for two bikes.

...walked out with a 6-month old Trek 1000 road bike for much less than I think I should have paid for it (I didn't know much about old road bikes at the time, maybe there was something unusual fitted to my mate's dad's bike), which started me down the slippery slope to Roadiedom. (in That London, it makes a bit more sense)

Just chuck some leaves on top of the bags and throw them in the grees waste silo, seems to be what everyone else does at our local tip.

Why didn't you just bury it?

That really made me laugh.

Boy I would love to have watched you explain that one.

In fact I wouldn't was it cringeworthy?

Two late night readings of bikemongercharlies weekly emails saw me richer to sum of a "bargain" Niner frame & a "bargain" Kona Ute. Both took considerable explaining, especially the Ute.

The tricky part is finding the right moment to bring it up in conversation. To be fair she took it quite well, but I never have a leg to stand on when she buys yet another pair of shoes or new coat.

I went to cash converters once in the late 1990s to search for an electric toaster.  Came back with a 1994 Kona Cindercone but no toaster IIRC.

Surely that only works the once though? You only bought 1 item, so it works the same way for her...

Saying all that I'm disappointed, I thought this was a game of Today I went to the Market and I bought... - but with a twist being it all had to be things that you could find at a tip.

Single axle. 6' x 4' max size. Bigger than that and you need a permit. But they are free. Work that one out!

It's so that they can track how often you visit and deter you from running a commercial waste business on the side.

I was given a Bontrager privatee frame last summer.  Went for a trawl round the Pinkbike classifieds for a set of £20 rigid forks and bought a fully built-up Jones spaceframe with a  spare fat front.  Quite happy with that accident!  Loving the Jones, Privateer is still a bare frame.  Aiming to rectify that shortly.

I can't compete with most of these. My last trip to the LBS for a single brake cable had me walking out with a pair of hydraulic brakes and a brake cable I no longer needed.

I did escalate a search for a specific and sub-£100 watch for my brothers birthday to said watch + a rather expensive Tag GMT for me.

My main weakness is Decathlon, walk wanting a pair of socks, end up spending £100+. Every. Single. Time.
