I'm not into geometry but I'm one of those pain in the butt people that can feel a few mm different in seat height etc. I was just wondering as everything seems to be longer and slacker and lower how this compares with a Jones spaceframe as I'm sure they are neither long nor slack but work for me. Yes they feel different when I switch from 29+ front to fat 26 front but they work. How does the modern style differ
BTW I'm not eveb sure of the Jones figures just curious as I've looked at a few full suspension bikes lately and everything seems so long
Different tools for different jobs. The Jones bikes are superb designs for adventure riding aren't they, long hard days in the saddle etc .
Long slack bikes are hillside playthings. Great fun hurtling down, capable of riding back up. Not sure I'd want to do 3 days bikepacking on one! (Although I'm sure someone has)
I dunno everything seems long and slack these days and the Jones is excellent at tech tho I'm not
My tuppence worth I bought long low slack, didn’t cut steerer stuck a Jones loop bar on and errrrrr ended up with just a slack bike!
i like my bikes to be comfy and low front ends ain’t ever that IMO
How does the modern style differ
Having owned a couple of Jones and a Geometron they are about as far apart as it's possible to be for two bikes that are designed to ride offroad.
Well stu iirc correctly it was your Jones ti I swooned after at sswc in Scotland 2006 I think. I love the Jones but the other day while out with a mate on his full suspension I noticed how smooth he was while I bounced a bit. So I was just wondering. I thought maybe a 100 - 130 travel might be nice. But they look so long and if I look at the used market for a similar geometry to the new stuff it's a size up. Which to me is odd
Might be a groundbreaking concept Mick but maybe just try a few bikes you like the look of and go from there.
if I look at the used market for a similar geometry to the new stuff it’s a size up. Which to me is odd
I think part of that is short seat tubes and long droppers changing how sizes are designed. So you can size down for a shorter bike or up for a longer one and still have the saddle at the same height.
Well I could do that stu 😉 only downside is lbs want 50 notes per bike I have a go on with only the one 50 refund on the bike I eventually buy so if I test 4 and buy one its 150 quid extra
That said it's cheaper than buying and not liking but still expensive to ride a few
Don't think I've ever paid for a test ride.
You need to improve your blagging skills mate.😉
Medium and large G16's in the garage if you ever want to try one.
My reply seems to have vanished but yeah I suppose I do need to update my blag lol and many thanks I'll bear that in mind 😉
I rode a Jones plus not that long ago, impressed. That's a really long bike, slack too, but not floppy-steering slack as the fork has a lot of offset. Just as good as the original but quite different. It had the same basic fit as the original bike though, just sticks bigger wheels further out. Those bigger wheels are a bit like suspension so that's where the benefit is when added to the longer wheelbase, can't see the plus bike with std wheels feeling as good. But I'd be faster and smoother over anything really rocky on a 130mm travel susser. Whether I'd enjoy riding or owning it as much as the Jones, that's a different point. The Jones is just a fairly unique bike, no point comparing it to other MTBs as they don't really work in the same way.
Yeah your right it is very unique and the whole package just works. It's my head going ooo.. shiny shiny bouncy bouncy lol
Ha.. have both, they do different things well. Which one works or feels best for any of us most of the time is just personal stuff. I'll still ride my Jones on group rides in rockier places, I'll not be first down the hill but who cares, I'm rarely last either so it's all good as a bunch riding together.
Not a bike geo expert as well...
Never saw a Jones bike and never biked one. Had a look at their web page. Unique (fun) machines! Guess nothing for my style of riding.
But: these (bit strange) forks have a huge offset. This will make it difficult to compare to any other bike!
"Long and slack": I like the looks of "long and slack". But this formula is too simple to describe the quality of a mountain bike. I own a "long and slack" full suspension and a bit more old fashioned 150/150 all mountain bike with fat tyres and quite low BB.
The long and slack bike is fun - but the (old fashioned) all mountain bike is more capable...

The one thing the Jones bikes have in common with these new long, low, slack bikes, is that the BB height (when sagged) is equally low.
If your struggling with lbs demos go to a demo weekend somewhere and try a bunch for free
I used to love how jones bikes rode and even owned singlespeedstu's cast off for a while, but now having a G13 and a G16. I could never be happy on a jones again im affraid even on flat boring trails

Sofaking up there has kind of cut to the chase.
Once you've gone slack you won't go back. 😲
That ^ happened to me too...
